100 Years Ago (1906)
Stanley Sunbeams -- The much talked of new Central depot
is nearly finished and for the present and future is suitable for its
proper purposes. Yet its limited size and height, in spite of its
stylishness, hardly meets the expectations of those who deemed it would
be such a building as would pre-eminently advertise the city.
Adv. -- New remedies for failing hair are continually
cropping up, and by the hopelessly bald these remedies are adopted with
confidence. The lentil cure is the latest.
Tr. Rev. Bishop Schwebach of La Crosse held confirmation
services at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in this village. A class of 67
was confirmed. The services were largely attended.
75 Years Ago (1931)
Anton Kutnorowski has taken the place of Frank Broeren
as manager of the Dairy Belt Cheese warehouse. Mr. Broeren is employed
as state cheese grader.
Joseph Schmittfranz, Thorp, was reelected president of
the Wisconsin Cheesemakers' Associate at the annual convention.

50 Years Ago (1956)
Five Clark County men who
registered for service in the armed forces, left by bus from Neillsville
last Thursday for the Minneapolis, MN induction center. The included
Milford D. Ewert, Colby; Lawrence Suda, Greenwood; Donald L. Okonski,
Owen; Leslie H. Deutschlander and Robert F. Benzschawel, Thorp.
The Thorp Telephone Company
has moved into their new one-story brick building south of the old frame
house.
Chief Ed Harycki, general
chairman, informed The Courier that there will be no house-to-house
canvass in tricks or treats this year by the children.
Nick Kazcor, digging a
trench for the laying of sewer extension on Depot Street in the
northwest part of the city, was pinned beneath a mound of dirt and rock
when the ditch cave in about 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon.
25 Years Ago (1981)
The Thorp City Council failed Monday night, October 12,
to pass a resolution to install two-hour parking limit signs in the
downtown business district.
The week of October 11 through 17 has been selected as
Honey Week in Wisconsin.
A Greenwood father and his two-year-old daughter were
killed in an early-morning fire at the family's residence, Friday,
October 9.
The Thorp Lions will celebrate its 50th anniversary
November 1st at the Quonset Hall.
The football Cards are looking for that one victory in
their final two games to clinch the Cloverbelt crown and a state playoff
berth.
10 Years Ago (1996) Marilyn Jaskot, Assistant Scoutmaster
Troop 27, received her Wood Badge. To earn the badge she spent six days
in the back woods of Camp Phillips in July of 1995 and developed 9 goals
for Troop 27. |
