100 Years Ago (1906)

Irvin Boardman has purchased the Barrett Bros. general store at Eidsvold and E. H. Barrett and family moved to this village.

The Owen Advertiser is the name of a new paper just launched on the sea of journalism at our neighboring village of Owen. Geo. Deuel of the Boyd Times-Herald is the editor and proprietor.

Ed Carpenter in company with Riley Burss has built a new hotel at Hannibal, the Forest View Hotel, and they are doing a nice business in that line.

Humor in Journalism –Next to a million dollars a hearty laugh is about as pleasant a think as one can have. No man and no newspaper can be really great without a sense of humor.

75 Years Ago (1931)

By a vote of 46 to 6 the Clark County Board adopted a resolution offered by Joseph Schmitt-Franz, Assemblyman from Thorp, petitioning the State Conservation Commission to close Clark County to deer hunters in 1932. Through a clerical error at the last session of the Legislature, the county was thrown open to deer hunting next year.

Harry R. Patchak caught an owl, after a short battle, which had a wing spread of fifty-two inches from tip to tip.

50 Years Ago (1956)

The Friendly Neighbors Club celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary on Nov. 4, at the American Legion Hall.

Over 40 boys turned out for positions on the 1956-1957 basketball teams with only one returning started from last year’s team, Don Soderberg, who won the Don Rubisch Memorial last year and was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder.

Clark County ranks first among Wisconsin counties in the number of beekeepers, according to annual report of the county extension office.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Rochester Silo, built just outside of Thorp on STH 29, offers a wide selection of farm storage systems. Chris and Martha Price, originally from Thorp, bought Rochester Silo in 1959, and through years of work and expansion, the company has changed the rural landscape.

The 1981-1982 Thorp High School JAZZ & SHOW CHOIR made their debut last Friday at an assembly program for the students of Colby High School.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Danny and Maureen Welgos, Thorp, are the recipients of the 1996 Special Service Award.

Julie Hull, daughter of Pat and Dan Hull, and Jenny Jaskot, daughter of Marilyn and Joe Jaskot, were accepted into the People to People Student Ambassador Program on November 2nd.

Bradley Mathison, a senior majoring in general science/education, was recently chosen as the 1996 University of Wisconsin-Platteville Homecoming King.
