100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – The new Central depot was opened for business on Monday. – Services were held in the new Presbyterian Church building for the first time on Sunday.

A Milwaukee architect is drawing plans for the new parochial school building to be erected here next summer by St. Bernard’s Parish.

A meeting of farmers was held at V. Izydorek’s hall on Monday evening last; the subject of the meeting being the erection of a butter and cheese factory. Henry Meyer of Darlington, WI addressed the meeting.

A. R. Morrison sold his livery business on Thursday last to Arthur Seaman and Wm. Glasshoff, and the new firm will take possession on Monday next. The price paid for the property was $2400.

75 Years Ago (1932)

At a regular meeting of the Thorp Volunteer Fire Company at The Club on Monday evening, Jos. Yetsko was elected Fire Chief and Wm. E. Barrett, Assistant Fire Chief.

In a game held in the gym at Cornell, Thorp High pulled through in the last half to beat the Cornell quintet. The game nearly turned out to be a free for all. The crowd turned against the referee until it looked like a fight. Down on the floor the players were having it out also.

Gilman Manufacturing Co. started a new department, which is doing the work of gluing heading.

50 Years Ago (1957)

A $300,000 addition to Stanley’s Victory Memorial Hospital, is expected to be started this spring, it was announced following a meeting of officers and directors of the institution this week.

After many years on absorbing increase costs of every item, they must purchase to give this town fine movies, Frank Kinas is forced to increase admission prices at the local theatre. The new charges starting this Sunday are adults 60¢, juniors 45¢ and children 20¢.

Three Thorp students are attending Marquette University: Rosanne M. Conway is a senior in the School of Speech; Donald A Jacques is a sophomore in Engineering, and Richard M. Wiater, a junior in Liberal Arts.

25 Years Ago (1982)

The Cantina on North Washington Street in Thorp is now under the direction of Gene Heller, as manager.

Seven Soviet Christians seeking help to immigrate to America in order to pursue their religious beliefs have found friends in Thorp.

10 Years Ago (1997)

The Left Field Inn in Lublin was completely destroyed by fire on January 23. The 83-year old building had been a bar and restaurant as well as a senior citizen meal site.

The recent plunging milk prices and a general mistrust of the Green Bay Cheese Exchange prompted farmers across the state to dump their milk in protest on January 22. Ed Ciolkosz of rural Thorp was one such farmer.
