100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – The saloon under the Hotel Maine has been disciplined for disorderness and closed, and as the city council last week voted 6 to 2 against the reopening of the saloon, it remains closed.

Bobb’s Mill and Country’ Round – Thos. and P. E. Bobb are putting up ice.

An extension of the lines of the Thorp Telephone Co. to Ogurek’s sawmill in the Town of Roosevelt is contemplated in the spring.

G. L. Hoesley has opened up a hotel at his new location, the Phillippi block, and named it “The Arlington.”

S. F. Christenson purchased Geo. Yoder’s residence and lot last week, and will take possession about April 1st, consideration $1100.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Anton Micke purchased a lot 60 x 197 ½ feet in size from John Daniels last week and expects to build a residence on same the coming summer.

A full house and an enthusiastic audience greeted the Minstrel Show given by the local American Legion Post at the Rialto Theatre.

Lublin Notes – The Lone Birch cheese factory, located about three miles southwest of Lublin, operated by Earl Sternbeck, was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday evening.

Bellinger Square – Looks as though we are going to have winter, but according to the ground hog, it won’t last long.

50 Years Ago (1957)

A Gilman man, Walter Powszukiewicz, died from injuries suffered when a tree he had previously partially cut, fell and struck him on the head.

In a recent meeting, Clark County school principals went on record as; favoring raising the minimum age for purchasing and consuming beer from 18 to 21 years.

John P. Opferkuch, 23, Hannibal, was fatally injured next to the Thorp Courier office when a pulpwood log rolled off a truck and struck him on the head, crushing his skull.

The Clark County Tavern League went on record in favor of keeping the age for drinking beer at 18 years old.

A capacity crowd thoroughly enjoyed Tuesday night’s game as the Cardinals won a thriller over Stanley 63-62 to gain a first place tie with Owen-Withee in the Eastern Cloverbelt conference.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Ronald Hoff, 42, Withee, escaped serious injury when the car he was driving collided with a westbound Soo Line train.

Margaret Sprague was this year’s recipient of the Jaycettes sponsored Outstanding Youth Woman of the Year Award.

The five member Thorp High School Future Business Leaders of America Parliamentary Procedure Team took first place at the Region 11 conference held on Feb. 6 at Wausau.
