100 Years Ago (1907)
Town of Roosevelt – Pietrasiewicz & Co. have completed their new
store building which is 18 x 28 feet in size. They are also building an
icehouse. – Farmers are shipping their tan bark to Milwaukee owing to
the low price being paid at Stanley, John Wrzosek being the shipper.
(Leon, this previous sentence was printed twice in the newspaper. I did
it once.)
The State Railway Commission has recommended a passenger fare of 2 ˝
cents to the legislature and the railways of the state will adopt the
same.
Wm. Finnegan who has been learning telegraphy at the local depot has
taken a position as assistant agent at Owen.
75 Years Ago (1932)
The Thorp Public Schools were closed on Tuesday for the remainder of the
week because of an epidemic of flu that has attacked many of the
students. The list of absences was sixty-five.
About eighty-five members of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 met at The Club
last Monday evening for the major purpose of voting on the purchase of a
legion hall. The old Howard building on the corner of Main and Jackson
Streets is the site in view, and is now owned by Thos. Polnaszek.
Mitterhoffer – A large dairy barn and most of the stock belonging to
Jos. Wisowaty burned to the ground.
50 Years Ago (1957)
Father Howard LePere, of Marshfield, addressed the Eagle Scouts at their
annual Recognition Banquet held at the Thorp Finance dining room.
Francis Conway gave the welcoming address.
Five Clark County men entered military service at the Minneapolis
Induction station on Feb. 7. The group includes Eugene H. Wilde,
formerly of Colby; Harold L. Stauffacher, Granton; DeWayne G. Lloyd
formerly of Neillsville, now of Stoughton; Ronald D. Ciolkosz, Thorp;
and Richard A. Brenton, Owen.
Mr. Francis J. Conway, President of Thorp Finance Corporation made a
presentation of $10,000 to the Thorp Public Schools for the improvement
of the high school commercial department.
A new farm service that brings a complete feed processing plant right
into a customer’s farmyard has been started in this area by Farmers Oil
Cooperative, Thorp.
25 Years Ago
Thorp’s 33rd Annual Winter Ice Carnival will be at the Thorp Ice Rink on
Sat., February 27.
Diane Lesniewski, proprietor of Picture Perfect Framing located at 200
N. Boardman St. in Thorp, held a grand opening with a nice turnout
stopping to see the shop.
On February 3, Petty Officer Jerome Teclaw received the Navy Achievement
Medal.
On February 6, 1982, Staff Sergeant Larry E. Luzinski was one of 72
graduates from the Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers School held at the
Wisconsin Military Academy at Camp Douglas, Wisconsin.
10 Years Ago (1997)
Thorp firefighters responded to a garage fire at Haas Sons, Inc., Thorp.
A paint shop that housed paint and painting equipment was destroyed, as
was a dump truck.
Floyd Hanley, Thorp, was selected by the Tri-County Retired Educators as
a candidate for the 1997 Retired Educator of the Year award.
