100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – Mrs. Effie Turner 73 years of age, one of the very earliest settlers of this county, is seriously ill with dropsy and is not expected to recover.

Worden Wavelets – Quite a few of the farmers of this vicinity are hauling sand to Thorp for the Sisters’ School.

The farmers’ meeting held on Saturday evening last, having in view the erection of a butter or cheese factory, was fairly well attended and the following committee was named to solicit takers of stock in the enterprise: Max Weber, Paul Glowacki, Mike Kronberg, Rudolph Verwyst and M. Burzynski. It is proposed to issue stock to the value of $4,000 divided into 200 shares at $20 per share, and incorporate under that state law the title of the new concern to be The Farmers’ Dairy Co., of Thorp, WI. Another meeting will be held as soon as the stock is subscribed to perfect the organization.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Someone broke the locks on the pumps at the White Eagle Oil Station last Thursday night and helped themselves to a quantity of gas.

Roger Creek and Town Line – The boys of the neighborhood have organized a basketball team and are practicing in Lawrence Thompson’s barn.

Lublin Notes – Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sternbeck have moved from Lublin to the Timothy Belt Cheese Factory located about 2 miles southeast of Thorp. Mr. Sternbeck expects to open the factory in the near future.

Reseburg Ramblings – Through the cooperation of senators, congressmen and our school district, a large portrait of George Washington, painted by Gilbert Stuart, has been placed in each room of our school.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Word was recently received from the Adjutant General’s Office at Madison, that Company “G” here at Stanley has a new commanding officer. Captain Joseph C. Pawlak who had commanded the company since 1952 has been moved up to the Battalion Staff as S-1, where he will function as Battalion Administrative Officer.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Pat Keating, a former Thorp resident, now living in Milwaukee, works for the Internal Revenue Service as a “Tax Assistor”. Ms. Keating, who is blind, uses an abacus and tax books in Braille in her work.

The Thorp Area Senior Citizen Center located in the 100 block of Washington St. in Thorp, is in the finishing stage in preparation for opening. Workers at the building have been applying the finishing touches.

10 Years Ago (1997)

The winner of the Thorp Jaycees “Beautiful Baby Contest” was Alyssa Nicole Rycerz, daughter of Ronald and Judy (Smith) Rycerz. Runner-up was Lacey Jane Roytek, daughter of Bruce and Terri Roytek.
