100 Years Ago (1907)
Geo. Yoder has purchased the confectionery stock of G. L. Hoseley and
will continue the business at the old stand.
The west end of The Courier building caught fire on Tuesday from a fire
set by a passing railroad engine. The fire was soon subdued by a flood
of water from the village waterworks hose.
Washbowl and pitcher 75˘, Tea dust 15, 25 lb. sack sugar $1.35; Homing
(like grandma used to make) per can 10.
75 Years Ago (1932)
Thorp Auto Sales Used Cars: 29 4-door $175; Coupe $150; coupe, Model A
$125; Chrysler Coupe ’27 $75; Hudson ’26 $25; Oakland ’25 $15. All
low-mileage cars, good tires and in good mechanical condition
Members of the local American Legion Post voted to purchase the lot
north of the fire station, owned by the Thorp Lumber Co. The lot
is 50 x 264 feet. They contemplate the erection of a new clubhouse on
the spot in the near future.
Otto Hiller started work on his property (the John Schultz Corner)
recently purchased on Monday. He expects to build a store and oil
station on the site.
Bellinger Square – Our patrolman on 73 has been presented with a brand
new outfit. Now watch Mr. Opachen; he sure will keep our road
spick and span although the new rig is harder to operate.
50 Years Ago (1957)
The Martin Johnson two-story farm home in the Town of Worden, about 7 ˝
miles southwest of Thorp, burned to the ground last Saturday morning.
The Town of Thorp voters went on record at their annual meeting Tuesday
to buy into the Rural Fire Department in this city.
Over thirty members of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church turned out last week
to donate their talents and time for the church on the erection of the
new convent located next to their school-chapel in the City of Thorp.
With 58 out of 62 precincts reporting in Clark County, the daylight
savings referendum was being soundly vetoed with the no vote 5,923 and
the yes vote 1, 956.
Curity disposable diapers, 13x17 ˝, 10x14 $1.98; Johnson baby powder, 9
oz., 53˘, Johnson baby oil, 5 oz., 49˘, Gerber baby cereal, 8 oz., 2 for
33˘.
Lawrence A. Olejniczak, fireman, USN, aboard the destroyer USS Richard
B. Anderson, participated in the largest amphibious operation to be held
in the Far East since World War II.
25 Years Ago (1982)
Kapsy’s Super Market in Gilman suffered heavy losses from a fire that
was detected by a jogger noticing smoke last Friday morning at 7:15 a.m.
Miss Heidi Baehman has been chosen as one of the twelve finalists in a
contest held by John Robert Powers Modeling School in Milwaukee on March
23rd.
Capping off a remarkable year for the Thorp basketball team, came the
announcement on Tuesday that Thorp’s Coach Jack Tetzner was named Coach
of the Year in Wisconsin by the Associated Press.
10 Years Ago (1997)
Harry J. Mateski, a 76 year old Stanley man, became Clark County’s first
traffic fatality of 1997 in a two vehicle collision on State Highway 29
some 3 miles west of Thorp.
