100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – The only contest at the city election was for the supervisorship of the Third Ward in which M. P. Walker, Stanley’s prominent politician, beat Frank Wallace by a vote of 90 to 53.
 
Worden Wavelets – Henry Schultze, August Henke and John Karpearski are all running brand new cream separators.
 
Jas. Crowley has purchased Otto Demert’s lot and residence.
 
75 Years Ago (1932)
 
No more fitting memorial could be given to the “Father of Our Country,” the 200th anniversary of whose birth we celebrate this year, than trees planted by the loving hands of hundreds of thousands of loyal and patriotic citizens.  The whole population will have a part in this Bicentennial celebration of the birth of George Washington this year.  It will become a veritable second Continental Army - an army of tree planters mobilized from every state and made up of young and old alike.
 
50 Years Ago (1957)
 
Dials will begin to whirl and dial-switching equipment will respond with each pulse of the dials as subscribers of the Thorp Telephone Company begin using their dial telephones after 12:01 a.m., Sunday, April 14th.
 
The West Worden Cheese Factory ceased operations on April 1st.
 
Milton J. Kodl, Thorp, enlisted in the Air Force, March 22; Marvin Oldham, Neillsville, enlisted in the Army, March 14; and Duane Fredrich, Owen, entered the Army, March 5.
 
Pvt. Leonard E. Prokopinski recently was graduated from the track vehicle maintenance course at The Artillery and Guided Missile Center, Fort Sill, OK.
 
Brach’s Eggs – 6 for 25˘, Brach’s Jelly Bird Eggs - 39˘, Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Rabbits – 6 for 25˘, Brach’s Melocreme Pets 29˘.
 
Adolph Koltis has taken over Cecil’s Shoe Shop.
 
25 Years Ago (1982)
 
On Tuesday, April 6, the old St. Bernard’s Elementary School located on Church St. in Thorp was demolished in the final phase of the removal of the vacant school building.
 
Bob Szymanski, Bruce Roytek and Brenda Serocki have been nominated to receive the State Farmer Degree, the highest degree awarded by the Wisconsin Association of Future Farmers of America.
 
10 Years Ago (1997)
 
Tornado winds destroyed a silo and part of the barn roof at the Charles Boehlke farm in the Town of Withee.  One cow was killed and damage estimates, for the barn alone, are at $60,000.
 
Fire and smoke damaged the interior of the Billy and Judy Buss home at N14402 Cty. Rd. M.
 
The United States Achievement Academy announced recently that Cara Stroinski, Thorp, has been named a United States National Award Winner in English.
