100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – Theo. A. Hoidahl, cashier of the N-W L Co. is about to make a ten weeks visit to his native country, Norway.
 
Bobb’s Mill – Geo. Craig and crew are raising Chas. Vetterkind’s barn this week preparing it for a new stone basement.  It is 40 by 64 feet in size.
 
C. F. Lusk has been appointed chief inspector of hardwoods and assistant secretary of the Wisconsin Hardwood Association.  His duties will require him to visit every mill manufacturing hardwood in the state.
 
75 Years Ago (1932)
 
The new parcel post rates, which have been approved by the Interstate Commerce Commission, Washington, are to become effective October 1.  The increase is expected to net the department $7,500,000.
 
Anton Micke has finished digging the basement for his new house in the southwest part of Thorp and will start on the wall this week.
 
Butler Items – Miss Inez Rossman of Reseburg closed a very successful year of teaching in the Butler School on Saturday with a picnic.
 
50 Years Ago (1957)
 
In a two-hour battle, the local firemen got under control a fire which was well underway of the farm home of Bernard Prokopiak, three miles north and a half-mile west of Thorp.
 
Hannibal exchange subscribers of the Gilman and Western Telephone Company will benefit by improved service with the installation of automatic dial telephones.
 
Diane Zaborowski, Thorp, is one of twenty-six contestants selected at the thirteen regional meetings, who will go to Beaver Dam in competition for the Alice in Dairyland Title at the state fair next August.
 
25 Years Ago (1982)
 
The eight young women of Thorp who have placed their names in the 1982 Miss Thorp Queen Contest are Lori Anibal, Lisa Baker, Karen Clark, Heidi Hoffman, Denise Hull, Margaret Jaskot, Deborah Orheim and Carmen Rosemeyer.
 
Mr. Daryl Braatz, FBLA advisor for the Thorp High School chapter, and business education teacher at Thorp High for fifteen years, has been elected to the Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda, Inc. Nat. Board of Directors.
 
10 Years Ago (1997)
 
Miss Thorp candidates for 1997-98 are Bridget Baures, Chris Boden, Mindy Pawlicki, and Lana Wirtala.  Princess candidates are Brandi Cheever, Michelle Jensen, Ashley Kaczmarcik, Shelly Lopez, Brandy Malaszuk, and Nicolette Person.
 
Two Thorp girls – Vickie Jaskot and Bridget Baures were recently selected by the faculty of Thorp High School to attend Badger Girls State to be held June 8-13 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
