100 Years Ago (1907)

Will pay 14 cents per dozen for eggs this week.  E. L. Snyder

Miss Cora Boardman has accepted the “hello” position at the Thorp Telephone Co.’s central station, in place of Miss Ida Black who has ably filled the place since the establishment of the exchange three years ago.

Summer weather – the real article – arrived on Saturday last, since which time the thermometer has been hovering around the ninety mark.

75 Years Ago (1932)

The Thorp Cash Club is sponsoring a Market Day and Public Wedding at Thorp on Saturday, June 25th.  Two young couples will be married on the Main Street of Thorp.

A windstorm last Thursday afternoon blew up a fire smoldering in the Thorp Lumber Co. yard and for a time things looked pretty dark for the north end of the village. The fire department strung all the hose they had and about that time rain fell, much to the relief of the property owners in that vicinity.

Schmitt’s Thorp Bakery – Saturday Special 15˘, Cherry, lemon, apple pies

Roger Creek and Town Line – The first strawberries to be placed on the market here came from the garden of Mrs. Susan Wagener.

Herman F. Doege, 67, a resident of this community since 1883, passed away on June 22, 1932 after a lingering illness.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Firemen of five communities and citizens of Gilman battled a raging fire, which for a time threatened that community of 450 persons Tuesday.  The blaze was discovered in the mill at the Konsella Lumber Co., located partially on the main street and north three blocks of the village at 5:45 a.m.

On Wed., June 12 the Pure Oil Dealers of the Northwestern Division of the Pure Oil Company attended a recognition dinner at the Elk’s Club in Eau Claire.  Dr. and Mrs. Nolechek of Thorp were honored guests at the speaker’s table as Dr. Nolechek is the only dealer in the State of Wisconsin who has handled Pure Oil products for over 30 years.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Dr. Peter H. Baehr of Thorp, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Baehr, received his degree of doctor of chiropractic (D.C.) during June commencement exercises of Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa.

The Red Cross Bloodmobile was in Thorp on Tuesday, June 22 from 11 a.m. through 5 p.m. at the Thorp Elementary School gym and according to Mrs. Dolly Hubbard, a total of 143 pints of blood was donated.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Thorp High School juniors Jason Dallas and Shilo Stigen are taking part in the 56th convening of the American Legion sponsored Badger Boys State being held this week on the campus of Ripon College.
