100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeam – Miss Lula Shafer has charge of the public library during the absence of its librarian Miss Dunn who is on a month’s vacation.

Worden Wavelets – Chas. Ramberg gave a dance in his barn on Saturday evening last.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Waldo Albert, who has been employed at the Dairy Belt Cheese Warehouse here, has gone to Vesper where he has a position as cheesemaker in a factory near that place.

Lye, 3 large cans 25¢; peanuts, fresh roasted, 3 lbs. 20¢; Boyd butter, now @ 16¢ lb; Monarch olive oil, 8 oz. bottle, 32¢.

The farmers in this vicinity are about one-half done haying and are beginning to consider themselves lucky if it keeps on raining.  Some of the grain is coming on fast and harvesting will be early for some of the farmers who sowed early.

50 Years Ago (1957)

A 22-year-old exchange student from East Pakistan, with the strictly “Pakastanish” name of Serajul Islam, will stay at the Ray Baldeschwiler farm west of Thorp.

Harry Smith was installed as the new commander of Thorp Legion Post No. 118.

The Federal Communications Commission announced granting the application of Central Wisconsin Broadcasting Inc., Neillsville, for a new radio station on 1370 kilowatt, day time.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Four students and one teacher from Thorp will be attending the Business World sessions this summer at Lawrence University in Appleton.  Attending will be Patsy Slowiak, Jennifer Osowski, Daryl Braatz, Joel Anderson and Jim Langteau.

A Greenwood man was killed and an Owen man was injured Wednesday night, June 30, after a one-car accident at the south intersection of Highway I and 53 in the Town of Washington.  Mark T. Olstinski, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver, Shawn M. Dale, 21, was treated and released for arm and back cuts.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Officer Michael J. Sybers is the latest addition to the Thorp Police Department.

Two weeks of effort came to an end last Thursday when searchers finally recovered the body of a missing fisherman.  According to a report from the Clark County Sheriff’s office, the body of Donald Zlesak, 62, of Merrillan was recovered from the Jackson County side of Lake Arbutus at around 6 a.m., June 24.
