100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – The Stanley Times, a newspaper printed and published here during the last year by Messrs. Williams of Marshfield, was discontinued on the 1st of August. The proprietors allege that it was an unprofitable enterprise.

Carl Klouda has begun the erection of a new machine shop building on the lots recently purchased by him.  Frank Laurent is boss carpenter.

The new creamery of the Thorp Dairy Company began operations on Monday, ninety-eight patrons delivering nearly 6,000 pounds of cream the first day.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Dean Lawrence, Clayborne Bogumill and Roman Possley are attending Boy Scout camp at Camp Manitou for two weeks.

Miss Anna Zielanis of Thorp completes her course in nurses training at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield on Sept. 1st and will graduate with a class of sixteen others on that date.

Goggle Eye News – Work has begun on the new school house for this district.  A well is being drilled and the basement is about to be started.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Top scores were awarded five Foremost-Blue Moon cheese-makers entering competition at the Northern Wisconsin District Fair at Chippewa Falls. 

Officials of Clark County’s towns Eaton and Warner have formed a fire protection district and agreed to purchase a new truck costing about $10,000.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Bud and Evelyn Cook were guests of honor in observance of their golden wedding anniversary held at the Legion Hall in Thorp on July 18, 1982.  A mock wedding, given by the Friendly Neighbors Club furnished the entertainment of the after-noon, with Beryl Wagener and Dean Hubbard of Thorp playing their original parts as flower-girl and ring-bearer.

The Union 76 gas station owned by Betty Bishop and located at the corner of Stanley and Washington Streets in Thorp will soon be remodeled to house the new offices of Royal Oil and Thor Gas, and in addition, self-serve gas pumps.

10 Years Ago (1997)

The Thorp School board hired new principals for both the high school and the middle/elementary school recently.  Dan Taft, a 20-year veteran of the Owen-Withee High school has been named to head THS in the coming year.  The elementary and middle schools will be headed by Martha Knudtson, who comes to Thorp after serving as principal at the Suring School north of Green Bay.

The U. S. Postal Service will honor the late Green Bay Packer coach Vince Lombardi with this week’s issue of a commemorative stamp.
