100 Years Ago (1907)

Jas. Golden opened a saloon in the Poppe building on Monday.

Rev. J. B. Bachman celebrated the 50th anniversary of his entry into the ministry on Thursday, August 15.

Several of our residents will use coal for fuel the coming winter, a number of cars of hard and soft coal having been unloaded here recently.

Jess Howard and family departed on Tuesday for Lyons, Colorado, where Mr. Howard has accepted a position as principal of the city schools at a good salary.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Aside from the donations by members of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118, the first cash donation by a Clark County citizen toward the construction of the new American Legion Hall at Thorp was made by Senator W. J. Rush of Neillsville, who handed a check of $10 to Adjutant Sam Barnhart.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Wolf moved into their new home north of the track last Friday.  Just recently completed, the Wolf bungalow is one of the smartest of the new houses recently built in the village.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Voelker age 4 years and 10 ˝ months, passed away last Wednesday morning at the home.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Fire of undetermined origin, discovered about 1:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon, completely destroyed a barn crammed with newly baled hay on the Mike Tomczak farm, five miles south and 3 ˝ miles east of Thorp in the Town of Reseburg.

The high school achievements of Ann E. Hedler, Thorp, have won for her a scholarship to Stout State College, Menomonie, according to an announcement made by officials of that college.

Reported missing in the woods near his home in the Town of Taft, Bernard Goodman, 14, was found in the cellar of his home.

25 Years Ago (1982)

The Thorp High School class of 1962 held its twenty year reunion on Saturday, August 7 at the Thorp Legion Hall.

Staff Sgt. Larry E. Luzinski, thorp, a member of the Army National Guard, was honored on Sunday, August 15, 1982 by the Milwaukee Journal for outstanding military service in ceremonies at the War Memorial Center in Milwaukee.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Searchers recovered the body of a Thorp man who jumped into the waters of Otter Lake near Stanley, Friday night.  The body of 29-year-old David J. Telisczak was recovered Saturday morning an hour after Chippewa deputy and Department of Natural Resources search teams had resumed their initial search efforts.
