100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – Last week the Farmers and Merchants Bank moved its wooden banking building from its site on the corner of Willard St. and First Avenue and will immediately erect on the now vacant corner an imposing building of brick and stone.

17¢ for eggs this week

George Burke and Anson Heagle have purchased the old Crosby & Meyer cheese factory and one-half acre site three miles east of the village.

The local telephone exchange will be in charge of Miss Mary Kass on Monday next owing to the resignation of Miss Cora Boardman.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Breezy Hill Cheese Factory Neighborhood – The people of this vicinity were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Ernest Steele, age 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Steele of Curtiss.

Butler Items – Corn picking and silo filling are the important industries in this part of the world at present.

50 Years Ago (1957)

The Mattes Livestock Market Inc., Thorp, will hold their 20th anniversary sale on two days, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 18th and 19th.  Each day the sales will start at noon.

The first bowling alleys for Thorp were torn down this past week and were located behind the Hallanger Hotel and erected by George Becker.

Bobb’s Mill – Vilas Telford and crew are remodeling Frank Meske’s locker plant.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Thorp Jaycees and Jaycettes assisted in the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association by manning telephones in the old Pabich building on Washington St. in Thorp.

Thirty new flags of the United States waved in the weekend breezes of Thorp during Labor Day weekend as a result of donations from Thorp and area merchants, business and citizens.

10 Years Ago (1997)

With considerable effort, Butler resident, Don Shoemaker sounded the 85-year-old bell atop that community’s town hall last month, ringing in the start of a weekend reunion there.
