100 Years Ago (1907)

Wochech Sowa, convicted in this county on May 4, 1901, for the murder of John Moore, the chief of police of Stanley, was granted a pardon by Gov. Davidson on Saturday last, after serving over six years of his fourteen year sentence at Waupun.  The tragedy occurred at Sowa’s home in the Town of Thorp.

S. R. Heagle, Anson Heagle and M. Wiltgen have formed a stock company to be known as the Gilman Manufacturing Company.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Jos. Rezino had the misfortune of losing one of his valuable cows one day last week, which was killed by hunters.

The recent snowfall has compelled the farmers to bring home their young stock that has been pastured elsewhere as well as to begin feeding hay.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Francis J. Conway, president of Thorp Finance Corporation, was elected president of the American Finance Conference at the group’s 24th annual convention.  He is also a director.  Previously he was a vice president and chairman of the membership committee.

Walter Hryniewicki, who has been operating a TV and radio store for the past twenty-one years, has accepted a position with the State of Wisconsin as a Radio Communication Engineer.

25 Years Ago (1982)

By joint resolution of Congress and Presidential Proclamation, Monday, November 15, has been declared “American Enterprise Day.”

Godzilla, a 2,740 lb. steer owned by Jim and Marle Lewan of Thorp, was the largest steer ever to be slaughtered by Nolechek’s Meats Inc. of Thorp.

A parish mission has been planned for St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp November 13 and 14.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Gene and Sandra Barnett have opened their new computer based Internet business, www.snowpuppy.com at 206 N. Washington St. in Thorp.

Drawing all-conference choice are Thorp High School 10th grader Heather Lipinski and 11th grader Joshua Korn.

Lena Abrahamson, Physical Therapist, joined the staff of Greenbriar Rehabilitation’s Contract Division at Oakbrook Manor in Thorp.
