100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – The Farmers and Merchants State Bank moved into its handsome new bank building on Monday.

While a large number of farmers are patiently waiting for a snowfall sufficient for sleighing, many are hauling fair-sized loads of bolts and cordwood on wagons.  The roads are in fine condition for wheeling, but the added expense of keeping horses well shod lessens the profits as a result.

M. Karpinski, of the Town of Reseburg, while driving across the railroad crossing two miles east of Thorp on Friday evening last was struck by passenger train No. 5.

75 Years Ago (1933)

Lublin School Notes – Eleven boys have been registered after passing their Tenderfoot tests.  The following have been registered: Scoutmaster – Philip Pejza; Assistant Scoutmaster – Floryn Gunia; 1st Patrol Leader – Louis Gunia, Ted Cichocki, Michael Ignowski, Chester Judycki, Bruno and Frank Maslowski, Andrew Welgos and Eldred Winger; 2nd Patrol Leader – Walter Mucha, John Kowalski and Raymond Ogurek; Treasurer – Walter Mucha and Scribe – Michael Ignowski.

50 Years Ago (1958)

After seeing damage done at the Thorp Theatre to 36 seats, we wonder why Frank Kinas wants to go through opening the theatre again.  Someone took a knife during one of the last movies shown here and literally put them to shreds.

All dogs running lose within the city limits will be shot on sight was the order put out by Police Chief Ed Harycki and Dr. R. H. Stuesser following a state confirmation report on one dog shot here Sunday.

25 Years Ago (1983)

Staff Sergeant Larry Luzinski of Thorp received congratulations and a citation from Detachment Commander Gary Thielman after being selected as the Battalion’s Soldier of the year for the northern part of the state.

Robert Tetzner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Tetzner, Thorp, had his clay sculpture shown as one of the sixteen art students from the UW-River Falls campus in a recent University of Wisconsin juried exhibition at the UW-Stevens Point campus.

10 Years Ago (1998)

Ed Kotecki, Thorp resident, never dreamed that a phone call interrupting his television program one afternoon would help put him in contact with Korean War buddies he hadn’t heard from in 43 years.

The following individual has been selected for inclusion in the 1997 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America (OYWA): Marilyn K. Koltis of Thorp.
