100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – The electric street lamps lighted up the city for the first time on Friday evening. – Alonzo Ruscher, formerly of this place, now of Kelso, WA, recently wrote to the Republicans a rosy letter of the welfare of the Stanley colony at Kelso.

Geo. Burke and Anton Heagle have sold the cheese factory site, three miles east of the village, owned by them, to Frank Switalski.  Consideration $225

75 Years Ago (1933)

Edward Asselin, our village constable, has received his appointment as Clark County Deputy Sheriff under Herman J. Olson who took over the Sheriff’s office Jan. 1st.

Postmaster Ralph H. Tolford died of heart failure at his home in the Town of Withee.

Dr. H. P. Landry of Cadott was a Thorp visitor on Thursday of last week.  Mr. Landry is a candidate for appointment to State Board of Dental Examiners.

The slippery roads after the rain are hard to navigate with horses and cars, but make excellent coasting for the children.

50 Years Ago (1958)

A meeting of the Clark County unit of the National Association of Postmasters met at the Sky Club here Saturday evening and included fifty persons at a 7 o’clock banquet in honor of Wm. S. Wagner who retired as Thorp postmaster on Nov. 30, 1957 with 34 ½ years of postal service as clerk and postmaster.

Joe A. Lato, living seven miles south of Thorp and one mile east, received the 900th telephone on January 16, 1958.  Since this date, fifteen phones have bee added.

Fire destroyed the barn of Mike Przybylski last Tuesday about 1:30 in the afternoon.

25 Years Ago (1983)

One of the results of the newly enacted Federal Gasoline Tax will be monies available for repairs of deteriorating concrete pavement joints on STH 29 from Chippewa Falls to Abbotsford.

The medical staff of Victory Memorial Hospital in Stanley recently elected new officers.  Dr. William Hopkins was elected president and Dr. Kenneth Wallmeyer of Thorp was elected as secretary-treasurer.

Reigning over the Sadie Hawkins dance planned for this Saturday evening, February 5, at Thorp High School is Joann Noah of Thorp and Todd Kryzanski of Thorp.

10 Years Ago (1998)

Brad Ceranski recently joined that Thorp High School teaching staff as a math teacher.

Thorp Catholic School announced Tuesday afternoon that school will close for the remainder of the week because of absenteeism due to sickness.

The Thorp Public Library is now more accessible to the public since new automatic doors were installed the third week of January.  This year marks the library’s centennial birthday.
