100 Years Ago (1908)

Worden Wavelets – A large crowd of young folks gathered at the home of Ira Clark to listen to his new phonograph on Sunday evening last.

Loyal has voted to install an electric light and water plant and will expend $17,000 for the same.

Eugene Martin was in town on Saturday last and says he intends to rebuild his saloon on the Stanley road, recently destroyed by fire, at once.

Seaman & Glashoff are showing some nice rigs these days.  Their livery is complete in every respect and a good steady business is enjoyed.

75 Years Ago (1933)

Mr. H. E. Root of the Horlamus Hatcheries of Ladysmith was at the Glenn Carter farm setting up the big 16,000 chick capacity incubator, which Mr. Carter is going to operate this season.

Roger Creek and Town Line – Our mail carrier, Jas. Cahil, plowed his way out to Clark’s Corner with a car Thursday morning and then returned to Stanley for a team to make the rest of his route with.

A fire caused by an overheated stove caused considerable damage to the garage at the H. T. Jalling home on Sunday evening.

50 Years Ago (1958)

A fire Sunday at the former Theodore Braun cheese factory, 9 miles northwest of Greenwood, demolished the two-story frame building, which contained the upstairs living quarters of Irvin Horn, Watkins Salesman.

Mrs. Ray Schmitt reports she saw the Russian Sputnik at 6:13 p.m. on Saturday.  Sputnik II is traveling at a height of about 1,100 miles.

25 Years Ago (1983)

Edward F. Novak, age 80, was the second Taylor County citizen in twelve days to die in a house fire.

Thorp’s small-town image “grew up” this month as its first fast food restaurant gave residents a big city taste treat.  McDonald’s opened its doors to eager customers Wednesday, February 11.  No longer will residents have to travel to distant cities jut to get a taste of those famous fries.

The new law requiring eight-year driving licenses is now in effect, according to the state Department of Transportation.
