100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – At the church union temperance meeting held in Gruber’s hall on Sunday evening last in the interest of civic reform, Rev. A. Amy presided and Rev. F. A. Byrne and Rev. John Granskon were the speakers.  The meeting was as large, interesting and significant as the one held a week previous. A similar meeting is to be held at the same place on Sunday evening next.

Anton Racikowski sold his blacksmith shop and one acre of land, three miles east of Thorp, on Monday last to Walter Mushel.  Consideration $600

75 Years Ago (1933)

The post offices at Pittsville, Vesper, Arpin and Unity were robbed during Monday night, the loot ranging from $25 to $400.

Head lettuce, large heads, each 5¢; Carrots, green top, per bunch 5¢; Honey 5 pound pail, 55¢; Pineapple, large can, 17¢; Rice, 5 pounds, 18¢.

An attempt was made on Monday night of last week to burn the Majkowicz cheese factory near Lublin. The fire was discovered in time and put out.  The man who set the building on fire has not been found.

William S. Wagner, editor of the Thorp Courier, received the appointment for the position of acting postmaster of Thorp, last week, Wednesday, and will take possession of the office on April 1st.

50 Years Ago (1958)

Clark County authorities Saturday settled the question of what happened to cause an 18-ton caterpillar belonging to Clark County to plunge into a shale pit north of Neillsville.  The overturned “cat” was found at the bottom of a 20-foot embankment Wednesday.

25 Years Ago (1983)

Joe Boden, Ralph Haas and Larry Depa of Thorp have been nominated to receive the State Farmer Degree, the highest degree awarded by the Wisconsin Association of Future Farmers of America.

An investigation is underway by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department on the theft of thirty-five head of cattle from Mattes Livestock Auction facility south of Thorp.

10 Years Ago (1998)

The American Legion celebrates 79 years of service to their country and its citizens this year.

Wisconsin Congressman Dave Obey announced today that he is co-sponsoring legislation to raise the minimum wage to $6.15 an hour by the year 2000.

Don and Mary Palmer of Reseburg were awarded the 1998 FFA Senior Farmer Award.
