100 Years Ago (1908)

The Boston Store: Going out of business, $12,000 worth of high grade dry goods, clothing, hats, caps, ladies and gents furnishing goods, boots, shoes, groceries, etc. Must be sold in 10 days

Owen has another newspaper, the Advertiser, with E.V. Nevins as publisher.

75 Years Ago (1933)

Prompt service of Guy R. Leiby’s Truck Transfer supplied the village taverns here early Friday morning with 80 cases, 17 halves and 6 quarters of beer. All those having non-intoxicating licenses were allowed to handle the beverage. Numerous brands were dispensed at the several places and free beer and lunches were given out at some of the business places.

By state decree it will be possible to go to the movies on Sunday in about another week without violating a state law. Wisconsin’s ancient blue law will cease to exist as soon as Gov. A. G. Schmedeman signs the Daugs bill removing the Sunday restrictions against recreation. The Senate concurred in the bill, 19 to 6, to give it final legislative approval.

50 Years Ago (1958)

Edward Zarada, 55, proprietor and operator of Zarada Electric in Thorp, passed away suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Thorp about 10:15 o’clock Monday evening, April 7, 1958.

A strike at the Frederick Post Manufacturing Company at Owen, involving an issue of wages, entered its eighth week with no immediate prospects for settlement.

25 Years Ago (1983)

Adam Simington, Grade 6, represented Thorp Public School at the Regional Spelling Bee for the CESA 6 area.

The Thorp High School Jazz and Show Choir will present In Concert VII this Saturday evening, April 16 at Thorp High School. The 8:00 p.m. performance will be a farewell concert for director Alton Accola, founder of the group.

10 Years Ago (1998)

The wait is now over! Thorp area residents have been anxiously awaiting the opening of another national fast food chain – Subway – and that wait is finally over. The Thorp Subway will open for business Wednesday, April 8th.

The Class A beer referendum failed to pass in a vote of 229-192 in Tuesday’s election.

Thorp High School Students Sherri Haas and Joshua Korn received 1998 Cloverbelt Conference Scholar-Athlete Awards at the annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet, March 17.
