100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – A barbershop is to be opened under (in) the basement of the Farmers and Merchants Bank by Oliver Neverdahl. – One case of diphtheria and one more of small pox are quarantined in the city.

A. R. Heagle has been appointed postmaster at Gilman where a new village is building up. Service of the new office began on Tuesday, being (bringing) supplies by way of Stanley until mail service is inaugurated on the Owen-Ladysmith railroad June 1.

75 Years Ago (1933)

Robert Benzschawel purchased Jos. Klouda’s shoe store building last week.

Neiman’s Corner – Wm. Przybylski, Jr. forgot that he left his Chrysler car in gear when he brought milk to Holzschuh’s cheese factory Sunday morning and started to crank it, the result was a damaged buggy for St. Neiman and Jos. Kryzanski. Also some milk was spilled.

50 Years Ago (1958)

Francis J. Conway, President of Thorp Finance Corporation, has received a citation from the Lane Bryant Annual Awards in recognition of outstanding community service for 1957 and is being considered for one of these national awards to be presented November 13, 1958 at The Plaza in New York.

The fire that completely destroyed a 50 x 125 foot barn on the Robert Schesel farm in the Town of Reseburg, 4 ½ miles south of Thorp caused an estimated $25,000 damage shortly before noon last Wednesday.

Thorp Boy Scouts took part in a city-wide “disaster operation” under simulated emergency conditions Saturday afternoon, April 12.

25 Years Ago (1983)

Chester M. Przybylski, a former Thorp resident, was installed as Stevens Point Area Jaycee President for 1983-84 on April 11.

Six members of the Thorp Volunteer Frie and Ambulance Department are completing studies to become an Emergency Medial Technician: Chuddy Senn, Mike Kopacz, Todd Steinmetz, Dan Dus, Dan Stroinski, and Stanley Lawcewicz.

10 Years Ago (1998)

The first truck hauled concrete, Friday, April 17th from Haas Sons Ready Mix’s new concrete plant located three miles west of Thorp on the south side of STH 29. The new concrete mixing plant is the second plant owned by the family.

The Thorp Cecil Tormey Unit 118 Legion Auxiliary is celebrating their 62nd birthday on Sunday, April 26, 1998.
