100 Years Ago (1908)

Ramblings – Frank Bertrand purchased David Wendt’s farm and took possession of the same last week.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – The new city ordinance for closing of saloons at 10 o’clock in the evening passed its first reading in the city council on May 5th. – M. P. Walker is now running the Hotel Maine, having taken over the management thereof from John M. Kohler, who retired from the business.
 
The question of building a county insane asylum is being agitated and will come before the next meeting of the county board.
 
About 200,000 feet of lumber, mostly pine, the property of register of deeds Oscar Fricke, E. J. Rossman and other Greenwood parties, located in the Town of Mead was destroyed by forest fires on Sunday afternoon last.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
Arnold Velcheck, Thorp, WI and a sophomore in the department of physical education at the University of Notre Dame, has won himself a regular berth with the Notre Dame Varsity baseball team in the outfield. 
 
Reseburg Ramblings – Reseburg now possesses a good baseball diamond located in Harold Mattes’ field.  Games will be played on Sundays.  Come out and see the team play.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
A call from the main division of the Ground Observers, Minneapolis to Ed Harycki Wednesday, put this city on watch within 15 minutes.  The men went on duty immediately for a four hour period from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Observers included Sunny Brunner, Bud Bishop, Ray Izydorek, Robert Cattanach, and Ed Harycki.  Because of overcast skies, no planes were spotted.
 
The Thorp Courier has met another milestone when they installed the latest type of offset press Thursday.
 
25 years Ago (1983)
 
A new Boy Scout Troop will be forming in Thorp in the near future and all interested boys between the ages of 11 and 16, from the City of Thorp or from the rural area, are welcome to join the program.
 
A transaction has recently taken place at the Thorp Courier with Mark LaGasse assuming the duties of advertising manager and shop foreman for commercial job printing and advertising.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
Jamie Polnaszek was awarded the 1998 Gold Crest Award.  The 1998 Silver Crest Award went to: Vicki Jaskot, Chris Boden, Sana Grajkowski and Dave Eslinger.
