100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – The proposed city ordinance for closing the saloons at ten o’clock in the evening was killed last week in the city council by a vote of four to three.

A case of diphtheria in Harry Aucutt’s family was reported on Thursday last and another on Sunday. The two cases are little children, a boy and girl, and all precautions have been taken by the health officers to prevent the further spread of the disease.

75 Years ago (1933)

About three o’clock Wednesday morning two men gained entrance to the Farmers Store here by breaking the glass on the south door and turning the night lock.

Next Sunday, May 28th, the Polish people of Lublin, WI and other Polish towns and communities will celebrate the one hundred forty second anniversary of the constitution of their native land, Poland.

50 Years Ago (1958)

Two state awards were received by the Thorp Locker Plant in the judging contest of the Wisconsin Locker Association at their convention held at Wisconsin Rapids May 18 and 19; a first in ham judging and a second in bacon.

Fire, which apparently broke out in a hayloft Monday evening, caused an estimated $30,000 damage to the farm of William Hazuga of the Town of Thorp.

Breezy Hill News – Another old landmark here is being razed – the Breezy Hill Cheese Factory owned by Ervin Schilling.

25 Years Ago (1983)

The Thorp Board of Education accepted one of four bids opened for band uniforms at Thorp High School during a special session of the Thorp Board of Education on May 18.

Edward Orzechowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Orzechowski, Thorp, is one of 32 Wisconsin FFA members to have been nominated by the Wisconsin Association of FFA to receive the American Farmer Degree.

Seventeen Thorp Catholic School eighth graders received diplomas at a special graduation liturgy Tuesday evening at the chapel. The liturgy was prepared by eighth grade teacher Mrs. Irene Zoromski.

10 Years Ago (1998)

Thorp area residents and visitors gathered at Thorp Memorial Park to pay tribute to the men and women who died serving their country. After a parade down Washington Street the crowd assembled to hear U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War Jim Haug, a 42-year member of American Legion Post 284.
