100 Years Ago (1908)

On another page may be found a cut and brief sketch of Mrs. Ida E. Boardman, who was a resident here for many years, but removed, to Chicago.  Mrs. Boardman made a large flat for the first Fourth of July celebration held here in 1880, the material being furnished by her husband, L. O. Garrison and Frank Fults and E. A. Boardman carried the flag at the head of the procession on that occasion.
 
M. Wiltgen and A. O. H have been at Gilman for several days assisting the mill crew in fighting forest fires threatening the destruction of the Gilman Manf’g Cos. Plant in which concern they are stockholders.
 
The extremely dry spell during the past two months has greatly reduced the supply of milk as pastures are short in feed.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
At the annual meeting of the local Red Cross organization held last week, John Verkuilen was re-elected chairman, L. P. Walsdorf, secretary, and Leon Bogumill, treasurer.
Yaeger News – The school is being equipped with playground equipment.  It includes basketball, volleyball, swings and improvement of the baseball diamond.—Most of the farmers (are) digging potatoes.  The yield is small because of the dry weather.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
Gary Lencz, 1 ˝ year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lencz of Lublin lost his left hand in a meat grinder at his parent’s home and grocery store Monday morning.
 
Eight Den Mothers from Thorp attended the White Pine District first “Cut Scout Round-Up,” an instructional meeting at St. Mary’s School in Stanley Thursday evening.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
Reigning over the Homecoming celebration this year will be King David Pszeniczny, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pszeniczny and Queen Lynette Van Ert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Van Ert.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
Bill Henke was the recipient of the 1998 Thorp Jaycee’s Annual Outstanding Business Person Award.  He was recognized for his accomplishments in the business world, his dedication as a husband and father, and his community service work through the Thorp Lions Club.
 
The 1998 Jaycee’s Pride in the Farm Award was given to Bruce and Rose Gulcynski.
