100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – G. E. Sliter of Wausau has bought the Konsella farm implement warehouse near the Co.’s store and will continue the same line of business therein. – It now appears that the city can neither rent nor sell water meters to consumers but must furnish them free of charge.  But consumers must pay the expense of putting them in.
 
L. Philips & Co. and L. Hayes have installed the local telephone service. 
 
75 Years ago (1933)
 
100 bags of candy, nuts, and apples were distributed to children by Santa Claus on the street last Saturday afternoon.  John Thielke impersonated the well-known gift giver.
 
30 degrees below zero Christmas morning in this vicinity with a slight warming up to 18 degrees below on Tuesday.
 
Checks totaling $21,698 were distributed today to 1240 CWA workers in Clark County for the week ending last Thursday by the local office under the supervision of Robert Kurth.
 
On Sunday evening of last week thieves stole four turkeys, three hens and one tom at the Joe Galenski farm north of Thorp.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
It’s hard to believe but the day of passenger train service for Thorp and some other towns between St. Paul and Chicago served exclusively by the Soo Line will be over next Tuesday.
 
Awakened by the continuous coughing of their two sons, Tony, 4, and Gary, 2, Mr. and Mrs. John Peterson and the boys, clad only in night clothing, narrowly escaped death when fire of undetermined origin gutted the interior of their brick farm home, ½ mile west of Greenwood, shortly before midnight.
 
Next week will be the first time in over 75 years the Thorp Courier will not be carrying the train schedules.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
Harley and Dorothy Svoma have been the owners of the Montgomery Wards store in Thorp since November 10 of this year.  They are the previous owners of the Silver Dollar Tavern, Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
Scott Barth, assistant manager of Thorp IGA used his creative talents and won big.  Scott was awarded a 46” RCA home theater projection television after placing 2nd in the National RV Guide Triple Crown Contest.
 
If you’re thinking of drinking and driving after New Year’s Eve, the State Department of Transportation (WisDOT) urges you to reconsider.  Beginning January 1, if you are convicted of Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) or if you refuse to take a chemical test, your driver’s record will retain those records for your lifetime.
