100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – W.D. Schultz resigned his office of water commissioner on Feb. 2 and D. J. Kean was appointed his successor. – A fire broke out on Monday afternoon in the upper part of Frank Konsela’s meat market and dwelling house, but the fire was controlled and extinguished by the fire department in a short time.
 
Butlerville – The men of the neighborhood are kept busy hunting wolves these days.  Several were seen about the school house and they are seriously afraid that one of them might gobble the school ma’am, which would never do.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Slot machines in Clark County were ordered out last week by Sheriff Herman Olson, following orders sent to District Attorney Hugh G. Haight by the attorney general of the state.
 
Members of the Thorp Volunteer Fire Co. held their annual meeting of the club last Wednesday evening.  The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:  President – L. P. Walsdorf, Vice-President – H. V. Soli, Secretary – L. E. Bogumill, Treasurer – Wm. S. Wagner, Fire Inspector – R. J. Brunner, and Fire Chief – Jos. Yetsko and Assistant Chief – W. E. Barrett.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
Councilmen accepted the offer of the Stanley Auto Exchange to provide a new police car for $475 and the year-old squad car at their recent meeting.
 
Deacon Hedler has been given the go-ahead sign for taking over the vacancy in the rural route at the Thorp Post Office.  Deacon has served many years as clerk at the post office.
 
Every available piece of the city’s snow removal equipment was thrown into use Tuesday afternoon as city workers battled the worst snowstorm of the season.  The 4 inches of snow that had already fallen before noon and the prediction of from 4 to 6 inches more by late Tuesday night prompted public school officials to dismiss by noon Tuesday.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
Jeff Darley of the Darley Fire Apparatus Company turned over the keys to Thorp Mayor, Dave Keating, and Keating gave the final payment for the new city fire truck, which was delivered Wed., Feb. 1.  The new Ford pumper replaces the old 1946 fire truck.
 
A relatively minor train accident occurred in Thorp on Tuesday morning, Feb. 7 at about 9 a.m. at the Washington St. crossing, resulting in extensive damage to a milk truck, minor damage to the train, and luckily, no injuries.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
The resolution authorizing the sale of county owned lands was struck down 9-17 last Thursday by Clark County Supervisors.  The vote is good news for many Thorp area sportsmen who faced losing their shooting range and snowmobile trail located south of Thorp in the Town of Worden.
