100 Years Ago (1909)

The nomination of Geo. B. Parkhill as postmaster of Thorp, to succeed himself, was confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday, Feb. 10th.  The term is four years.
 
The Catholics at Loyal have decided to erect a solid brick school building 42 x 70 feet in size, two stories and basement, the coming season.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – The local Board of Education is proposing to borrow $18,000 of the state trust to enable it to build additional school buildings.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Jalling’s: Codfish, 1 pound wood boxes, 25¢; Canned Spaghetti with Cheese, 2 cans, 19¢; Peaberry coffee, fancy quality, per pound 19¢.
 
Goggle Eye News – According to the groundhog story winter ended on February 2nd, a cloudy day when no shadows could be seen.  However, we cannot explain why the temperature should drop to 19 degrees below zero on Thursday morning of last week, if the winter ended on Friday, February 2nd.  Mr. Groundhog will have to do some explaining to that effect this time.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
Stanley officials this week are considering a request from Thorp that a school consolidation survey be conducted in this area.  Thorp’s school board approved such a survey last Thursday and the Thorp City Council voted unanimously in favor of the proposal Friday night.
 
At a banquet held Thursday evening in the dining room of the Finance building, the new officers of the Thorp Businessmen’s Association took over the reigns of the group for the ensuing year.  Those who will serve for the coming year include: President – Ben Burkhardt, Vice President – Cliff Ebben, Secretary – Frank Winiarczyk, and Treasurer Jack LaGasse.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The Thorp Board of Education reduced the teaching staff at the high school by 1-1/4 positions Monday night at a special meeting held mostly in closed session.  Also due to uncertainty of participation, wrestling and golf were cancelled for the 1984-85 school year.
 
The Thorp area Multiple Sclerosis Campaign for 1983 raised over $1,700 according to Chairperson Bev Stevens.  October 1983 was proclaimed MS Education Month.  Top fundraisers from the campaign are Laurissa Juzwiak, Bobby Poisl, Jennifer Lew, Renee Szemraj, June Lingenfelter, Todd Schesel, and Brigid Lindquist.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
The Thorp FBLS Chapter competed at the FBLA Region II Conference at S.C. Everest High School at Schofield, WI on Saturday, February 13.  Thorp High School was well represented with several students placing high in their categories: Jason Jacks, 4th place in Business Calculations; Mindy Haas, 4th place in Accounting I; Carly Hein, 3rd place in Business Procedures; and Donald Eichman, 5th place in Introduction to Business.
