100 Years Ago (1909)

Polley Notes – We understand that on March 1st, Heagle Bros. of Gilman will inaugurate an eleven hour day in their stave and heading factory.
 
E. A. Boardman & Sons saw mill began operations last week.
 
Jos. Bogumill has sold his store, saloon and land three miles east of Thorp to Martin Zukowski. Consideration $7,000
 
It has been officially announced that rural mail routes Nos. 3 and 4 from Thorp post office have been established and service will be inaugurated May 1st.  The routes will serve 220 families.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – H. L. Larson has sold out the Stanley Bakery to E. Rickard who will continue the business.
 
75 Years ago (1934)
 
St. Mary’s of Assumption Parish at Lublin will celebrate its eighth anniversary on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of March.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – The Roger Creek store opened up for business again last week. – The White Way Cheese Factory paid 27 cents per lb. for butterfat on Feb. 15th.
 
Breezy Hill Cheese Factory Neighborhood – A large crowd attended the hard time party at the Geo. Duell home Tuesday evening and helped Mr. Duell celebrate his birthday.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
A large semi-truck, loaded with livestock feed, overturned at a spot along state highway 29 near Boyd early Saturday.  Driver of the truck was not injured, according to County Traffic Officer Max Brookshaw’s report.
 
Northern States Power Company plans to spend more than $165,000 in improvements to its Wissota hydro-electric plant and outlet facilities for the plant.  Plans have also been made for rebuilding two miles of the south Thorp rural line at a cost of nearly $7,000.  Replacing regulators on the Gilman feeder line at Thorp will cost $5,300.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The Thorp Jaycettes are very proud to recognize Mary Lynn Grajkowski as the Outstanding Young Woman of 1984.
 
The Rev. Joseph A Walijewski, former pastor of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp, received the second annual Brother James Miller Justice and Peace Award Sunday, Feb. 19.
 
Former Thorpite, John E. Boie, is the new President Elect of the national Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
The board tuned down a request by basketball coach Roger Moe for Sunday practices, at their regular monthly meeting last Wednesday.
 
The Thorp School District recently polled district parents of 2, 3, and 4-year-old children to find out whether or not there was sufficient interest in a four year old kindergarten.
 
Superintendent Gerald Eichman asked the Thorp School Board for a directive to urge the WIAA to go ahead with realignment plans after a request by Chippewa-McDonell asking for Thorp support.
