100 Years Ago (1909)

Polley Notes – At a public meeting held at the school house last Friday evening it was decided that Polley should have a public library, and the following people were elected as a library board: Mrs. J. Wicks, A. Vangsness, M. Olson, C. Beam, Mrs. R. Hugoboom, J. Wicks, and H. Drake. --- Mrs. Forest is having building material delivered for the erection of a millinery store and a dwelling house.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – It is doubtful if Stanley will have a municipal court owing to the county board recently voting unanimously that such a court is unnecessary and inexpedient.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Jos. J. Pawlak of the Farmers Hardware Store has been busy the past two weeks in remodeling the interior of his store.  New display tables and counters have been installed and new merchandise added.  Mr. Pawlak has joined the “Our Own Store” group of cooperative buyers and now desires to pass the savings made in his buying to his customers.
 
Not since the days when out grandparents took their families in horse-drawn vehicles to corn-husking bees, barn-raisings and the like, has the need of community social development been so urgent.  The family must be kept happy and it cannot be kept happy if the community does not function.  Not for years has the happiness of the farm family been as dependent upon the community as now.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
A delegation from the City of Thorp left Wednesday morning for Madison to appear for a bill introduced by assembly-man Frank Nikolay to put the road south under the state trunk system.
 
Plans for a new high school in Stanley were a step nearer completion the past week as the city council authorized the school board to have working drawings prepared.  The new school according to plans will cost in the neighborhood of $1,000,000.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
Joe Carlson celebrated the grand opening of his machine and welding shop Saturday, March 24.  The shop is located behind the Cardinal Motel, downtown Thorp, and they specialize in all types of welding.  Joe’s grand opening comes after being in business for some time.
 
Recently the Thorp Chapter of FBLA began a project in which the long-range goal will be to find a business to occupy the now empty ITT Life Insurance building.  This project is one, which will prove how serious the community is about its future and its growth.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
The Thorp Business Association honored the Zajack family as the Outstanding Business Persons at their monthly meeting March 17th at Scott’s Pub.
 
The community history banner created by the Thorp Area Historical Society will hang in the State Capitol Building in Madison March 29th – April 6th.
