100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – The new school building in the second ward, about a quarter of a mile south of the high school was opened and occupied on Monday, Nov. 29th.
 
Gilman Newslets – Furnaces are being placed in the residences of A. R. and Anson Heagle this week. – Tony Kotecki has moved into his new dwelling, which he recently erected.
 
Reseburg Ramblings – Wm. Krause sold a team of heavy workhorses last week for $450.
 
Barrett Bros. place a new twenty horse power Lauson gasoline engine in their elevator building last week to take the place of a smaller engine.  The engine will be used for grinding feed during the winter.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Apparently failing to step from the highway although directly in the path of an approaching truck, John Johnson, 20, was instantly killed and his brother, Lloyd Johnson, 23, still lies critically injured in the Owen Hospital as the result of an accident, which occurred nine miles east of Owen on Highway 29 early Monday night.  Both boys are from Stanley, the sons of Jens Peter Johnson.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
The Thorp Telephone Company has filed an application with the Public Service Commission for authority to install additional dial equipment at the exchange here at an estimated cost of $9,791.16.
 
After receiving as “A” in the District Drama Contest at Eau Claire, the Junior Speech Class of Thorp High School entered the Sectional Drama Contest at Rice Lake on November 19.  Under the direction of Mr. Mitchell, the cast consists of Peggy Alger as Miss Page, Barbara Guell as Ma Fisher, Pat Keating portraying Mrs. Floyd, Pat Hmielak as Anne, Sylvester Marek as Pa Fisher and Adam Waiter as Emil.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
On Thanksgiving Day, Leon and Lil officially hung the first hand painted mural to cover the north wall.  The beautiful painting, entitled “Wisconsin Sunset,” was painted y Dale Wehlacz, formerly of Thorp, now residing in Golden Valley, MN.
 
A 200 lb. black bear sow, who was the mother of four cubs, was illegally shot during the 1984 gun deer season.  The illegal incident occurred on the Clark and Eau Claire County Line in the Town of Wilson.  The matter is still under investigation.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
Imagine, right here in Thorp, there is a group that has been recognized as “first place in the nation!”  The National Office of the Future Business Leaders of America has announced that the Thorp FBLA Chapter has received first place in the nation for the Largest Local Chapter based on high school population.
 
Anton Plechacek, of Thorp, received his “Knight of the Year” award from Frank Ogurek at the Knights of Columbus banquet, which was held on October 10.
 
George Klovas, Justin Rosemeyer and Julius Klapatauskas were presented special plaques for being members of 40 years in the Knights of Columbus.
