100 Years Ago (1910)
Dr. W. R. McCutcheon has leased the rooms adjoining Jos. Klouda’s
shoe store and will use same for office purposes. A number of
lady school teachers, chaperoned by Principal E. N. Danne, visited
Emerson Bros. big logging camp north of here on Saturday last.
Several cases of Diphtheria are reported among children in the country
district. H. M. Leihole has resumed his old job of scaling logs
in Nye, Lusk & Hudson’s yards. 75 Years Ago (1935)
Rolling Meadows – The neighbors were all quite surprised when they
woke up Monday morning to find the weather 32 below zero in this
vicinity. The roads are impassible for the children to attend
school and also for the mail carrier. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Osowski, well-known couple, residing southeast of the village, observed
their golden wedding jubilee on Saturday last. Cutting and
putting up ice from the pond in the village park was commenced on Monday
by the Dairy Belt Cheese Co. A power driven circle saw is being
used to cut the ice, thus eliminating a lot of hard labor.
50 Years Ago (1960) The City of Thorp now has
an ambulance through the generosity of two local residents. At a
special meeting of the city council, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Schmidt
presented the City of Thorp with a 1954 Pontiac Ambulance. Six
persons in a Stanley dentist’s family narrowly escaped death from coal
gas Friday morning. Dr. and Mrs. V. C. Flaten and four children
are recovering at Victory Medical Hospital from the effects of the gas.
Following a tip Monday, we traveled over to Stanley to see the boys
on strike at the site of the new high school there. It seems like
it has something to do with the boys who handle the cement.
25 Years Ago (1985) Katie Kaz, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ray Kaz, Thorp, received second runner up honors as Clark
County’s representative in the 1985 Fairest of the Fair contest held at
the Mare Plaza, Milwaukee Wednesday, January 9. Father Joseph
Walijewski, better known as Father Joe in Thorp, is preparing to lead
Pope John Paul through a slum in Lima, Peru, as part of the Pope’s
12-day South American Tour. The Thorp Fire Department was called
out to the Stanley Lobacy residence in the Town of Reseburg, Fire No.
531, on Sunday, January 20 at about 2:30 p.m. to extinguish a chimney
fire. No damage was reported. 10 Years Ago (2000)
At 6:19 p.m. last Saturday volunteer firefighters braved frigid
temperatures to answer the call to put out a blaze at the home of David
Erickson at W11977 Hixwood Rd. When the firemen arrived, the garage was
engulfed in flames, which were spreading to the house. Judge Jon
Counsell, Attorney Charles Senn, Corporation Counsel for Clark County,
Attorney Frank Vazquez, and Clark County District attorney Darwin Zwieg
met with media and citizens Sunday night, January 23rd at the Loyal
American Legion Hall for an “Ask the Candidates.”
