100 Years Ago (1910)
Stanley Sunbeams – Dr. C. H. Erdman has been appointed local
physician for the Soo Line. Bobbs’ Mill and Country ‘Round –
There will soon be no “dark corners” in our church as plans on a new
lighting system are in progress. Frank Pritzl sold his cheese
factory, dwelling and three acres of land, in the Town of Worden, to Mat
Meyer of Fond du Lac, last week. Consideration $3100, Mr. Meyer
will take possession about Feb. 15th. 75 Years Ago
(1935) After a hard struggle through several months of
delays, the building committee on the new auditorium addition to the
public school building, report that construction is now progressing
rapidly and the project will be finished by the latter part of March.
One case of Scarlet Fever has been discovered amongst the students
in our high school. Town of Taft News – Our north and south road
is still impassible to cars. Even the county roads are blocked
after a heavy snow storm. Pineland Corners – Who said anything
about a mild winter? It was only 45 below zero Fahrenheit
Wednesday last at sunrise. 50 Years Ago (1960)
A. E. Bauer, a member of the American Legion committee for the
Winter Ice Carnival presented the king and the queen of the event with
crowns. Terry Keating, son of Joseph Keating was named King and
Diane Badzinski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Badzinski was named
queen. With donations of an ambulance last week, over $40,000 of
emergency equipment now serves this city and area townships.
25 Years Ago (1985) The Thorp Fire Department
was called to the TNR Bar, 207 N. Washington St. Friday at about 7:45
p.m. on a report of a natural gas leak. Thorp’s girls’
basketball coach Bill Hrycki has been named to the Wisconsin Basketball
Coaches Association Executive Committee as a Class C Representative.
The honor was formally granted to the coach Sunday, January 27 at a
WBCA meeting in Madison. 10 Years Ago (2000)
Team lead dogs, Dasher and Sadie, were key to helping Roland
DeBauche, Thorp, to take the lead and keep it last weekend in The High
Cliff Race in Appleton. An avid dog-sled racer, Roland won the
10-dog division competition with a time of 39:20. He competed
against 10 other racers in the 11-mile race. The Thorp Police
Department received a call at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25th,
concerning a disturbance taking place in the alley between N. Boardman
and N. Thorp Street in the city. Upon the officer’s arrival
approximately 10-15 juveniles and adults were observed fleeing the
scene. Police received information from witnesses that six or
seven youths had entered a nearby house. Officers investigated and
found several youths inside. Two juveniles and two adults were
positively identified as being involved and were arrested. The matter is
still under investigation. Further arrests are expected.
