100 Years Ago (1910)
Stanley Sunbeams – The salaries of the city officers of Stanley were
fixed by the council last week as follows: City clerk, per year $300;
treasurer, $200; assessor, $175; attorney, $225; physician and health
officer, $100; Chief of police, $600; and street commissioner, $360.
The farmhouse of Richard Biddle, in the Town of Reseburg caught
fire on Sunday evening last, but was discovered and the flames
distinguished before damage was done. Wm. Phillipi took charge
of the railroad station at Jewett, as agent, last week.
75 Years Ago (1935) Pineland Corners – A short while
ago a rather exciting incident occurred in this rather quiet country. A
team of horses ran away late in the afternoon from Petrulis at the time
the youngsters in 1st and 2nd grade were going home from school. The
children that were in back saw the team was driverless and called to
those ahead to stop them. The young Wechlacz twins quickly got into
action. With one on each side, one grabbed a rope that was hanging
from the bridle and therewith stopped the horses. Edwin Filipek promptly
jumped on the sleigh and secured the lines until the owner, Frank Kurtz,
came up. The boys are only about eight years old and really
deserve high commendation for their courageous action.
50 Years Ago (1960) Approximately 700 stockholders
attended the annual meeting of Thorp Finance Corporation at its home
office Monday, February 8. This was the largest crowd that has ever
attended such a meeting. The Thorp Courier was notified this
week by Cong. Lester Johnson that postal officials have turned down the
request for city delivery in this city. Several persons have
come forth during the past week to offer donations for equipping the
ambulance Thorp. Since the ambulance was first put into service
here, Sunday, January 31st, it has been constantly on the go.
25 Years Ago (1985) New safety devices will be
installed at the North Washington Street intersection with the Soo Line
Railroad, according to three state transportation officials who visit
Thorp Tuesday afternoon. The Thorp Fire Department was summoned
to the Lawrence Wink residence, Fire No. 357, in the Town of Reseburg,
February 1. The 10 a.m. call was for a small chimney fire that was
controlled immediately. A rural Greenwood man was killed
instantly in a car-truck collision near Loyal, Friday afternoon February
1. Clayton W. Schultz, 72, of Route 2, Greenwood, was pronounced
dead at the scene of multiple head and chest injuries, according to
Clark County Coroner Robert Lulloff. 10 Years Ago (2000)
Miss Thorp Mindy Haas represented Thorp at the Annual St. Paul
Winter Carnival on January 28th and 29th. To make sure that
there will be young people ready to take the lead in promoting good
citizenship, the Legion sponsors the American Legion Freedom Foundation
essay contest. Lane Peleschak, Thorp High School Senior, competed
successfully in the district level. She will now compete in regionals
at UW-Stevens Point on March 4.
