100 Years Ago (1910)
Stanley Sunbeams – L. I. Johnson has closed his plumbing business
here and is about to move to Minnesota. Gilman Newslets – Aug.
Walsdorf of Thorp came up on Friday and is now hauling logs and bolts. –
Louis Miller has opened a blacksmith shop here and is now prepared to do
all kinds of work in that line. Heiser & Burkhardt began the
manufacture of box material at their new factory last week, having an
order for five carloads to fill. Dr. W. R. McCutcheon is getting
stone, sand, lumber and shingles on the ground preparatory to building a
residence on his five acre tract of land in McGrogan’s addition, early
in the spring. 75 Years Ago (1935) A
small fire at the home of Mrs. Albert Albert called out the local fire

It seems to be the sign of the times: businesses in agricultural
communities suffering because of a weakening farm economy. The
problem is nationwide and Thorp is directly affected. In the last
year, four businesses have been forced to close their doors because of
low sales and high internet rates. The latest victim is the Thorp
Farmers Cooperative. After several hundred district residents
objected to its decision, the Gilman School Board held a special meeting
February 6, where it reaffirmed its support of scheduling athletic
practices after school. 10 Years Ago (2000)
Thorp area farmers Dave and Marilyn Mayenschein and their son Mike
were featured in an article of the February issue of Successful Farming
dealing with family farm transfer. Despite low milk pricings and the
prevailing gloomy outlook in farming, the Mayenscheins are looking at a
bright future for their family farm. Three local athletes from
the Thorp Adult Special Olympics 3-18 competed at this year’s Special
Olympics Wisconsin 2000 State Winter Games in Wausau, February 11 – 13.
Kristopher Gindt placed 3rd in the men’s 500 meter cross country and 4th
in the men’s 1K cross country. Carolyn Voelker took 1st place in
the coed 5K unified cross country event. Her brother Chris Voelker
