100 Years Ago (1910)
Worden Wavelets – The entertainment given by Howard Landry and his
pupils on the evening of the 22nd was pronounced a success by all who
heard it, which included nearly all of the parents in the district.
Ogurek’s Mill and Vicinity – Quite a number of farmers are hauling logs
and bolts to Ogurek’s Mill. Gilman Newslets – The new iron
bridge arrived Monday and will soon be place over the Yellow River on
the Polley-Gilman Road. Tramps have been plentiful for several
weeks past, and the lock-up is occupied by two or three nearly every
night. The Soo cut-off between Owen and Spencer will be built at
once and construction work will begin in a few days, it is reported.
75 Years Ago (1935) Pineland Corners – The
biggest feather-stripping party of the season was held Thursday evening
at the Leon Andruszkiewicz Sr. home. Quite a number of young folks
were present for a change and took part in the stripping too. A
bountiful lunch was served around midnight and everybody went home with
a smile on their face. A chimney fire at the home of Mrs. Louis
Kolb called out the local fire department on Sunday evening. No
damage resulted. 50 Years Ago (1960)
Ronnie Brandt, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brandt, Stanley,
was badly burned when gas that had been spilled on his clothing was
ignited at Thorpe’s Filling Station a week ago. It was announced
at the regular scout meeting Tuesday evening at the old city village
hall by Scoutmaster Bud Bishop that the Thorp Boy Scout Troop will sell
the new 50-star American flags. 25 Years Ago (1985)
In memory of Cliff Ebben, who was on the Thorp Fire Department and
Ambulance Service for over 30 years before his death in 1983, past fire
department president, Dave Shewczyk presented a trophy case in his name
to Cliff’s wife, Katie Ebben. The case is at city hall.
You may of heard it, or you may not have. If you did, don’t
believe it. What shouldn’t be believed in a recent rumor
circulating here that Cray Research, Inc. was going to open a branch
office in the vacant ITT complex? The thought is nice, but
apparently not true. Arson is believed to be the cause of a fire
that left approximately $3000 damage to a Town of Reseburg house Friday
evening, Feb. 22. According to the authorities the house is located one
mile east and two miles south of Mattes Livestock. 10
Years Ago (2000) With the clock ticking off valuable
minutes of the current session of the legislature, which ends in April,
the City of Stanley and officials from four surrounding counties hosted
a press conference last Friday morning at the Stanley Correctional
Facility to urge the legislature to pass funding for the new privately
built prison. The Thorp Police Department once again proved it’s
not smart to break the law. Police Chief Jim Albert arrested one adult
male and one adult female at approximately 5:30 p.m. this past Monday
evening for the theft of a TV, VCR and video camera taken from the Thorp
High School Agriculture Department sometime after 10:30 p.m. on Thursday
evening.
