100 Years Ago (1910)
Stanley Sunbeams – A movement is on foot to give the Stanleyites a
chance to vote for No License at the coming election. – Jas. Notman has
been appointed warehouseman of the N-W-L Co. in place of H. N. Bennett
who resigned preparatory to moving to Eau Claire. Butlerville –
D. N. Butler is expecting to start his saw mill soon. The Spur
Dew Drop says that a young, pretty school teacher, who is teaching near
Boyd, inaugurated a new cure for tardiness recently. She offered a
kiss to the first arrival at school each morning. The next morning at 5
o’clock three young men were seen roosting on the fence and by 6 all
boys of the school and two directors had put in an appearance.
75 Years Ago (1935) Roger Creek and Town Line –
When Joe Wagener went to hitch up his team to take his milk to the
factory Sunday morning he found a new horse in the barn, a colt having
arrived during the night. The raising of colts, which was
abandoned some years ago, because of a surplus of horses, has been
resumed since horses are becoming scarce and bringing a high price.
Roger Creek and Town Line – Wm. Blazel installed a new boiler in his
cheese factory recently. 50 Years Ago (1960)
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ziemba of Stanley announce the opening of their
new air-conditioned bowling lanes on Wednesday, March 23. A
group of fifteen Gray Ladies of Thorp, who are affiliated with the Clark
County Chapter of the American Red Cross, received their caps in a
special ceremony at Victory Medical Hospital. Superintendent Alice
Thorpe was in charge. Cadott residents who think the girl on the
cover of the 1960 Wisconsin Highway map looks a lot like Jane Kysilko of
Cadott are correct because it is she! 25 Years Ago
(1985) Senior FBLA member, Julie Sniegowski, was
recently selected as Throp FBLA’s candidate for Who’s Who in FBLA.
Terry Olson, Thorp School District Administrator, was one of 110 area
“volunteers” placed under arrest by the American Cancer Society.
The society used its “Jail ‘n Bail” program to raise $48,000 in pledges
for cancer treatment and research. An estimated $200 damage was
reported after a Sunday morning barn fire at the Ed Hempleman Jr. Farm,
fire No. 1023, in the Town of Thorp. John Oberle, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Gene Oberle, of Thorp, was one of three District One Technical
Institute students to return with medals from the Wisconsin Restaurant
Association Convention and Trade Show competition at the Mecca in
Milwaukee, March 6. 10 Years Ago (2000)
Eighteen-year-old Amanda Bresina of Gilman became Taylor County’s first
traffic fatality of 2000. Early reports that Bresina lost control of
her vehicle as she traveled northbound on STH 73, approximately one mile
north of STH 64, early Thursday morning, March 9, crossing the center
line where she was struck by a southbound straight truck driven by
Rodney E. Martens, 37, of Thorp. Thorp Elementary School student
Christ Chmelik qualified for the State Geography Bee, which will be held
on April 7, in Milwaukee. Only 100 students qualified in the
state.
