The new brass band practices twice a week at the village hall. Hixon
Mead is their instructor. Herman Banderob purchased Dr.
McCutcheon’s office building last week and moved same to the rear of his
harness shop lot for use as a store house. H. J. Minard went to
Gilman on Monday to handle the lever in a new saw mill just completed
there. If this pleasant weather continues a few days longer,
farm work will begin in earnest next week. L. F. Herzberg has
just put in stock a Fuller & Johnson pumping engine. Will operate your
pump whether the wind blows or not. Look it over.
75 Years Ago (1935) Posen and Country ‘Round News –
Roads are passable for Model T Fords only if they are in good condition.
Goggle Eye News – The Goggle Eye Creek was at its height on
Thursday of last week. The roads in many places were inundated to a
depth of two feet and more in places. The bridge crossing the
North Fork River near the Tom Szatalowicz farm was made impassable by
the high water, which washed out a part of the road adjacent to the
bridge on the west side. It is understood a new bridge is to be
erected at a new location. Town of Taft News – An old time dance
was held at Vic. Skalecki’s March 19th. W. Brown and son Orville were
the musicians and a large crowd from here attended. 50
Years Ago (1960) On his visit to Thorp, Robert Kennedy
chatted with his brother’s delegate, Francis Conway of Thorp, who was
elected recently at a district meeting as a delegate-at-large for Sen.
John Kennedy of Massachusetts. The Clark County School Committee
conducted a public hearing at the Sterling School in the Town of Withee
on Monday, evening, March 21. As a result of the public hearing
and conference with the school boards, the school committee ordered the
dissolution of the Sterling School District and the attachment of all of
its territory to the Thorp School District for all school purposes.
25 Years Ago (1985) The supports for the roof
and much of the roof itself were severely burned, causing the portion of
the roof remaining to crush into the structure, leaving just four walls
to display what once housed Jerry’s Sport Shop and Mid-State Insurance.
James E. Chapin, State Commander of the Wisconsin American Legion,
will be the main speaker at the Thorp Legion’s 66th annual birthday
party, Sunday, March 24. 10 Years Ago (2000)
Thorp residents have another dining option. The Ol’ Firehouse
Restaurant & Pizzeria has reopened under the joint ownership of Rich
Rinehart and Jerry Simons. According to Clark County Sheriff
Dale Olson, on March 14, 2000 at approximately 7:35 p.m., his office
received a report of a one car rollover on CTH G in Hendren Township.
The investigation showed that one male subject, Darryl B. Maresch, age
49, was traveling westbound on CTH G, when he lost control of his
vehicle and entered the ditch and rolled over several times.
Maresch was thrown from the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the
scene by Clark County Coroner, Richard Schleifer.
