100 Years Ago (1910)
Jas. Boylan purchased a handsome team of horses from Wm. Krause on
Monday, paying $472 for the pair. Jas. Boylan was at Marshfield
on Saturday last where he purchased the Jos. Gibson farm located near
Longwood, containing 320 acres, from Chas Blodget. He will take
possession at once. Consideration $13,500 The Thorp
opera house was far too small to accommodate the crowd for the exercises
on Memorial Day. Andrew Herman is building a new farm residence,
with full basement under same, on his farm northwest of the village. The
main part is 18 x 26 and wing 16 x 18. Mike Artabasy is doing the
mason work and Peter Balcer the carpenter work. Among the twenty
five graduates from the High School at Stanley this year, Miss Loretta
F. Tormey, of this village, has been chosen to pronounce the valedictory
address to her classmates, honor extended to a student who ranks first
in scholarships. 75 Years Ago (1935)
Lawrence Heagle, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Heagle, who is deaf, has been
selling business signs from town to town, has been in 25 different
states, traveling in a Ford T Coupe, and reports that Kentucky is the
nicest state he has seen so far, also one of he most prosperous looking.
Roger Creek and Town Line – The Wagener Bros. have rented the 80
acre farm adjoining their home farm on the west and known as the old
Loper place. They are now working 160 acres of land. Theo.
Woldt sold the Wild Cherry Cheese Factory northwest of Thorp to Art
Natzke of Junction who took possession of the factory June 1st.
50 Years Ago (1960) Two youths are in the Stanley
Hospital and three others were injured in a head-on accident on Hwy. 73
a mile and one-half north of here about 1:30 a.m., Monday. In the
hospital are Richard Vetterkind, 18, of rural Thorp and Larry Frese, 19,
Thorp. Released from the hospital later Monday morning were Jerome
Neisius, 20, Beverly Hempleman, 18, and Justin Jakowicz, 22, all of
Thorp. Chippewa County authorities Friday sent out a missing
person’s radio item in Wisconsin and Iowa for Steve Sackrach, 35,
Stanley, missing for more than a week. A school bus owned by St.
Hedwig’s Catholic School of Thorp and a Dolly Madison ice cream truck
from Eau Claire collided on Highway 29, two miles east of here at 7:10
a.m. Friday. 25 Years Ago (1985) When a
good teacher retires, a school always feels the loss. Thorp
Elementary School will certainly miss Mary Hanley, who is retiring at
the end of this school year after more than 41 years of classroom
experience, and 26 years dedicated to the children of Thorp.
Thorp Catholic School held a celebration for Mrs. Margaret Harycki, Wed.
May 22nd, who is retiring after many years of teaching, 30 years in
Catholic schools. Paul Ebben and Jan Stuttgen competed at the
sectional track meet on May 23, and each finished third, just missing a
trip to state. 10 Years Ago (2000) The
FBLA officers for the 2000-2001 school year have been elected.
