100 Years Ago (1910)

Reseburg Ramblings – Mike Karpinski has the frame up for a handsome new farm residence. – Otto Sommer and family now ride in a new fourteen horse motor buggy, which he purchased last week.
 
Gilman Newslets – Mr. Bruegger has purchased two lots and is clearing the same.  He will shortly begin the erection of a dwelling 26 x 30. – Frank Lubner, who has long been employed as section foremen on the S. M. and P., has moved to Thorp.
 
Hixon Mead is substituting as carrier on Oakley Parkhill’s mail route this week.
 
Our ball club played a nine at Boyd on Sunday last, the result being Thorp 3 and Boyd 2 scores. The game is said to have been almost errorless.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)
 
The Thorp Dairy Co. purchased of the Thorp Lumber Co., the old Johnnie Huls tavern building, 24 x 50 feet, which was located 2 miles west of town.  Al. Craig and crew moved it onto the Dairy Co. property in the village where it will be used as a warehouse.
 
Bobb’s Mill – A pack of stray dogs roaming around our neighborhood killed several sheep for Lester Butterfield and Virgil Bobb last week.
 
The R. W. Briggs residence property on Highway 29 has been sold to the Farmers Oil Co-operative who will occupy the site soon with an oil station.
 
Miss Cecelia Smitke is employed as operator at the Thorp Telephone Co.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
Thorp does not have a case of rabies in case you have heard a report to the contrary. A rumor has been afloat stating as much.  A check with authorities has killed the report.
 
There’s been talk of having the words, THORP, in “scotchlite” on the city’s water tank.  If it can be done the city’s name would be visible for miles around – day and night.
 
Last week was a busy one for school consolidations in Clark County. The Curtiss School District was dissolved and most of the district was attached to the Abbotsford School District.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)
 
Ms. Patricia A. Keating, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Keating of Thorp won a Special Achievement Award at the Milwaukee Federal Officials Association 2nd Annual Awards Day Luncheon, June 6th.  Ms. Keating, an Internal Revenue Service employee, was the first of three sight impaired employees hired by the Milwaukee IRS District.
 
Five area young women will compete in the annual Miss Thorp competition: Kristine Kroll, Catherine Miller, Renee Penk, Bonnie Stokosa, and Lynette Van Ert.  Three girls will seek the title of Princes Thorp: Allison Harycki, Valerie Mason and Karen Voelker.
 
Renee Marie Kohlnhofer, Medford, became the bride of Daniel Thomas Slowiak, Thorp, on Saturday June 1, 1985.
 
10 Years Ago (2000)
 
On Friday, June 16, the Thorp IGA will host a group of Russian grocers on a U. S. tour sponsored by the Department of Agriculture. The six visiting Russians will be studying food distributions and grocery marketing practices in the U. S.
 
The city took the first step at the regular month business meeting Monday night towards obtaining a Community
Development Block Grant (CDBG).
