100 Years Ago (1891)

Born: to Mat Smitke and wife on Nov. 1, a son.
Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Mac Adams on Oct. 26th, a son.
Born: to Mr. and Mrs. John Roth a son, on Monday Nov. 2nd.

John Keleher traded his farm in the Town of Thorp to John Blunk Jr. for a house and lot in the western part of the village.

This is a delightful season of the year to visit the country for those who appreciate the beauties of nature in the changing colors of the foliage, which is now at its prettiest.

Frank Klauk and Miss Lena Banderob were married on Saturday morning last at Eidsvold by C. A. Krupp, J.P.

Barney Klinsing and Miss Katie Ziehr were married at the Catholic Church on Tuesday morning.

Born: to P. Glasshof and wife on Oct. 31, a daughter.

A new street lamp has been put up in front of Conner’s Saloon and Smith’s barber shop.

75 Years Ago

Bobb’s Mill – A little son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bohren, November 12th.

A light snow storm on Sunday morning made conditions for hunting deer ideal.  The freeze-up in general came on Saturday morning the day previous.

Oakley L. Parkhill and Miss Clara Olson were married at the bride’s home at Centura, Wis. on Saturday, November 4th.  They will reside at Abbotsford.

The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jno Deutschlander affected with infantile paralysis some time ago is reported to be improving slowly.

A number of members of the Thorp Concert Band serenaded a number of individuals here on Friday evening last and also played on the streets for the benefit of all in honor (of) President Wilson’s re-election.

Herb Bishop and Louis Waldsorf are reported to have killed the first deer in this vicinity.

Snug weather!  Down to 6 below zero on Tuesday morning, Nov. 14.  No wonder after the frost of the week previous.

J. E. Fults, brother of Walter Fults, of this place, who has had charge of the manual training department of the schools at Marinette for several years past met with an accident while operating a saw last week by which he lost the four fingers of his left hand.  Mr. Fults is a graduate of Thorp High School, taught local schools here for several years and later completed a course in manual training at the Oshkosh Normal.

Hugo Wagner of Vesper, who has been in charge of the Dairy Belt Cheese factory during the past season, was in the city the past week on his way to Thorp, where he will locate.

Walter Kingman, of Glendive, Mont., arrived here with his bride on Friday last having been united in marriage the day before to Miss Bertha Taggert at the latter’s home at Bronson, Mich.

50 Years Ago

George Stanek, 42, formerly of Bellinger, was killed Saturday, November 1, about 10:30 p.m., while on duty as fireman on the Northwestern Railroad.  He was on the Challenger enroute to California when he put his head out of the engine window to see if the water intake was O.K., when the signal arm struck him in back of the head.  Death was instantaneous.

Rockford, Ill., in a service read at 4:00 in the afternoon before the fireplace in the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Dorn, their daughter, Dorothy, became the bride of Sergt. William Heidemann, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Heidemann of Thorp.

Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Micke, in the Town of Worden an eight and one-half pound baby boy Wednesday morning Nov. 12th.

Joseph Nelson was born in the Town of Thorp on July 12, 1896.  He died on Nov. 1, 1941, having reached the age of 45 years. 

A seven pound son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Art Hansen at Victory Hospital at Stanley, Tuesday, November 4, 1941.

West Worden – Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brown on October 27, a son.  They named him Richard James.

Bobb’s Mill – A son, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Vetterkind on Nov. 8.

Reseburg – Mr. and Mrs. Philip Mattes are the proud parents of a ten and one-half pound baby boy, born on Friday.

Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Reno Goetsch at the Memorial Hospital in Wausau, on Tuesday, November 4th, a seven pound daughter, Barbara Jeanne.  Mrs. Goetsch will be remembered here as Eunice Asselin.

An eight and one-half pound baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Ward last Sunday.

Breezy Hill – Miss Loretta Brunett was badly burned last Friday evening and is confined to her bed.

25 Year Ago

David Weinberger, 74, passed away at Victory Memorial Hospital on Saturday evening, November 5th.

County men drafted for military service were: Arlyn D. Boie, Stanley; Ronald S. Sandel, Thorp; Jeffrey M. Anderson, Thorp; William S. Bielecki, Thorp; Carl R. Petke, Withee.

Dean Ebben began participating in a sales training program for Kohler Co., June 20, 1966.

Miss Luellyn Schmidt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Schmidt, route 1, Thorp, is eligible for membership in Sibma Epsilon Sigma, freshmen women’s honor fraternity.

Mrs. Mildred Redlin, 64, of Eau Claire, widow of Irvin J. Redlin, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Claybourne Bogumill, Thorp, Saturday morning.

Rudolph Deutschlander, 80, former resident of Thorp residing in Seattle, Wash. passed away at Seattle on Sunday, November 6th.

Lublin – Word was received by the Walter Cwikla’s that their son Leroy had both legs broken when he jumped from a helicopter while serving in Vietnam.

Word was received here of the birth of a 7 lb. daughter Oct. 19th to Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Williams of Minneapolis.  Mrs. Williams was the former Mary Ann Wilcenski.  They named the baby Victoria Josephine.

Army Private First Class Robert Kaczmarek, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Kaczmarek, Lublin, is a member of the 805th Transportation Co. which arrived in Vietman (Vietnam) Oct. 15.

Andrew J. Molczan, 82, passed away Friday, Oct. 28th of a heart attack at the Havenet Nursing Home, Owen.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Michalski of Marshfield on November 7, twin boys, weight 7 lbs. 4 oz. and 6 lbs. and 4 oz.  Mrs. Michalski is remembered here as Lorraine Tomkowiak.

S.M. /2 Reinold L. Benzschawel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Benzschawel, Thorp, serving with the U. S. Navy in Vietnam, has received the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Bronze Star and Purple Heart, while serving with Seal Tem one in Vietnam.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zurakowski celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Oct. 22, at St. Hedwig’s Chapel.

Mrs. Margaret Sallis, 53, wife of Dr. Douglas Sallis of Stanley, died Saturday afternoon in Luther Hospital at Eau Claire.
