100 Years Ago (1892)

A reunion of Clark County soldiers is being held at Greenwood this week.

H. Banderob has added an addition to the residence portion of his harness shop.

At the adjourned school meeting on Tuesday evening; (missing words) to the present school building, instead of building upon a new site.

R. A. Winter, the Jeweler suffered a severe paralytic stroke on Thursday afternoon last and has been confined to his room at the Forest Queen House ever since.  Being of a very nervous temperament his illness is considered quite serious.

Stanley Sunbeams – A construction crew consisting of pile drivers, carpenters, etc. have commenced the building of the N.W.L. Co’s, projected planning (planing) mill; the dimensions of which are 170x144 feet. – J. Merton has opened a barbering establishment near the Lytle House.

Eidsvold – Bill Warner attempted to amputate his leg with a double bit ax last Friday but did a very bungling job. – W. S. Parks book a bicycle ride to Cadott last Sunday returning home on the cars.

Neiman’s Corner – W. Lukasiewicz broke his leg last Monday and was taken to the hospital.

Bobb’s Mill – Walter Budzinski raised a barn on Monday. – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Tylka on June 11th.

Worden – Mr. Butler is learning the cheese making business at the Breezy Hill factory.

Mr. and Mrs. John Verkuilen motored to Wausau on Saturday returning on Sunday with their daughter Miss Florence and Miss Mary Tolford who have completed a very successful year’s work at the training school there.  Mrs. Jos. Rueter, a sister of Mr. Verkuilen, and her two children accompanied them for a short visit.

Ed. Clapper and family moved to Stanley last week where the former has secured employment in the Northwestern Lumber Co’s sawmill.

Ephram Ohmen, son of Mrs. Jno Ohmen of this village, who has been attending a Business College at Winona, Minn., for the past ten months, has secured employment with the Reliance Coal Co., at Minneapolis.

50 Years Ago

The new federal automobile use stamps went on sale at the local post office on June 10th and will be on sale here until July 31.  After that it will be necessary to go to a first or second class post office to secure the stamp.  The stamps sell for $5 and are good for the year from July 1. 1942, to July 1, 1943.  The law requires that the stamps be conspicuously posted on every vehicle in use on July 1st.

A pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church here on Thursday morning last, when Father Muckerheide joined in holy matrimony, Miss Edith Wink, daughter of Albert Wink, of the Town of Reseburg, and Mr. Albert Chmelik, son of Joseph Chmelik of Cornell.

An eight pound 14 ounce baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hastreiter Tuesday, June 16th, at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Deuel on Friday, June 5th, at the Stanley hospital.

Northeast of Gilman – A son, the fourth, was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Prasnicki on Wednesday, June 10th.  They named him Francis Markus.

Correction – East Worden – Last weeks: A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Bielecki, June 5th not June 15th.

Gilman – Lieut. Raymond Vincent Wetzel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Wetzel, of this village, met his death in an airplane crash at Hempstead, N.Y., on Wednesday, May 27th.

Junction – The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Horonziak was baptized Sunday at St. Mary’s Czestochowa Church at Junction.  In infant was named Walter Daniel.

A Gilman woman was killed in a car accident Monday.  Dead is Mrs. Harry (Dorothy) Ogle, 56, route 2 Gilman.  She was killed in a head-on crash on Highway 8 about 24 miles west of Tomahawk.

Sp. 4 Larry Frese, son of Emmett Frese, Thorp, received the U. S. Silver Star in ceremonies at the Thorp Cecil Tormey Post 118 American Legion Clubhouse, Saturday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wynimko, received word that they are the proud grandparents of their first grandchild, a 7 lb. 12 ½ oz. baby girl, born on June 10, 1967 to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brodbeck Jr., at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.

Zion Lutheran Church in Wausau was the setting Saturday, June 10 for the candlelight marriage ceremony of Miss Cheryl Lee Freiberg and Anton H. Dern.

Harry Vanderhyden, 75, passed away of a heart attack on Wednesday, June 7th at the Home of the Aged, Greenwood.

Mrs. Ida A. Schultze, 75, Stanley, died Friday at her home.

Arlene Dus, who completed her junior year at Gilman High School, has been selected to go to Brazil this summer as an exchange student under the International Fellowship plan.

J. Peter Bartl, Thorp, has received the Bachelor of Science degree in management and electrical engineering at the 101st Commencement exercises of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Friday June 9.

Lublin – The Lublin Fire Dept. was called to the farm home of Bill Bereza last Friday to extinguish a fire of a shed which had caught on fire and was a threat to the barn. – Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Kuehni are the proud parents of a baby boy born June 1.  The named him Allen Edward.

Mary Jane (Hedler) Ciolkosz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hedler, Thorp and wife of Lawrence Ciolkosz, Thorp, graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing Janesville, on Sunday, June 4, 1967.

Miss Grace M Doege, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Doege of Greenwood, has been assigned to the position of reservations agent for American Airlines.  She will be stationed in Chicago.
