100 Years Ago (1893)

About four inches of snow fell on Monday.

John Maier purchased Jacob Glaser’s farm last week.

Born: to Lorenzo Bruno and wife, on March 18th, a 12 lb. boy, with Dr. McCutcheon attending physician.

Thos. Steele Jr. moved to the N. L. W. Co.’s big farm south of town this week, having secured the position of manager of the same.

Albert Livermore and Miss Lola Hutchins were married at the residence of the bride’s parents in the Town of Thorp, by Justice Geo. Burke, on the 15th inst.

Stanley Sunbeams – C. H. Erdman M. D., successor to Dr. Bradley, as the resident doctor, here is from Augusta, and is a graduate of the medical department of the State University of Tennessee.  His office is on Willard St. opposite the Lytle House.

Eidsvold – The young men of this place have invested in a set of boxing gloves and slugging is now all the go.

75 Years Ago (1918)

Lombard – Lukas Haibo, who enlisted in Uncle Sam’s army in the Stanley Co. last spring, and was in Waco, Texas almost ready to leave for France, received an honorable discharge and returned home last week.

Chas. Possley purchased a Ford last week.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Soderberg on Tuesday, March 26yh.

Geo. Schmidt sold four two year old grade Holstein heifers last week to Adam Wojtkielewiec for $390.

Herman Friess of Cadott was a business visitor here on Saturday last.  Mr. Friess has sold his hardware stock in that city but still retains the farm implements which he handled in connection with the hardware line.

The patrolmen appointed by the county state road and bridge committee last week for this part of the county were Jay Alger and Geo. Ebben.  The former will have charge of the road from Morgan’s corner west to the county line, and the latter from Morgan’s corner east to Black River.  The salaries for each patrolman will be $130 per month.

Casper Stszeszynski moved to a small farm near St. Paul the first of the week with his family.

50 Years Ago (1943)

John LaGasse, 57, Thorp barber, passed away suddenly of a heart attack at his home here on Friday afternoon, March 26.  He had suffered a slight attack last fall but since then had apparently been in excellent health.

Mrs. Mayland Nieman, 50, formerly known as Jennie Zukowski, passed away at her home in Aberdeen, Wash., on March 23, 1943.

Mr. Frank Stewart and Mrs. Esther Warner, of Thorp, were quietly married by Rev. Carver at the Methodist Church at Hudson, Wis. on Saturday, March 20th.

Attorney Corwin C. Guell received word last Friday that he had been appointed Lieutenant, junior grade in the United States Naval Reserve and is now waiting for orders to report for active duty.

Earl Francis D’Lamatter, 22, of the Town of Wilson, was inducted in the Army Nov. 24, 1941.  Sometime, in November he landed in North Africa, where he was killed in action, Feb. 22, 1943, in defense of his country.

Mitterhoffer – This community was shocked with the sudden death of Joseph Wozniak.

Lone Oak – Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Pete Salvack, Saturday, March the 27th, a baby boy.

Butler – A daughter was born on Sunday, Feb. 28, to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Butler at the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alpha Hall in Augusta.

25 Years Ago (1968)

Gary Bandor, critically injured in a jeep accident last Tuesday at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, died Saturday night of a cerebral hemorrhage and basil brain dramage (damage) at Ft. Sill.  Bandor is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Bandor of Thorp.

Walter Burzynski, 78, route 2, Stanley, Town of Colburn, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Monday morning.

The 50th Anniversary Banquet held by the Thorp American Legion Post was well attended at the multi-purpose room of the Thorp High School Saturday evening with about 225 in attendance.

Henry Karpinski, 71 years of Town of Reseburg farmer, was found dead in a field on his farm shortly before noon Friday, March 22, from injuries suffered when his clothing became entangled in a rotating shaft on a manure spreader.

Mrs. Harold Oldroyd, 72, passed away in Milwaukee while staying at her daughter’s, Mrs. Orville Moranchek, Monday morning, March 24 at 12:30 a.m.

Otto C. Hiller, 75, formerly of Thorp, now residing at Plymouth, passed away at a Plymouth Hospital, Monday, March 25th after a lingering illness.
