100 Years Ago (1893)

Six inches of snow fell on Thursday last but has again disappeared.

The post office at Sterling has recently been made a money order office.

Mrs. R. Schofield, of Greenwood has been conducting a singing class here for the past two weeks.

The result of the election at Loyal on the question of incorporation resulted in 58 votes being cast for it and 7 against.

Notice – The taxpayers and residents of the territory hereinafter described, hereby give notice that we will on Saturday, April 29, 1893, or as soon thereafter as counsel can be heard apply to the circuit court for Clark County, State of Wisconsin, at city of Neillsville in said county for an order incorporating as a Village, to the known as the Village of Thorp.  And that we have caused a correct and verified map and survey of said territory and census at the drug store of C. H. Sheldon, a resident of said territory, where the same will remain subject to examination at all reasonable hours by every person interested.  Thorp, Wis. March 15th, 1893

It looks again as if we were to have a backward spring.  Cold, sloppy and wet weather so far makes it anything but pleasant and farmers are, as yet, unable to do anything in the way of plowing or seeding.

75 Years Ago (1918)

Bobb’s Mill – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Buss on April 29th. – Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shore, who have lived in the southern part of the state the past two years, returned here last week to make their home.

Bonczyk’s Corner – Joseph Langiewicz purchased a 40-acre farm from Jos. Chmielak two miles from Zukowski’s corner, he intends to move on same sometime this week.  Also Mat. Milus purchased a 40-acre farm four miles south of Thorp. Also, Paul Konieczny of Milwaukee bought Felix Koscielski’s farm.

South Point and Vicinity – Andrew Abramczak move on his farm which he purchased from C. R. Flanders last fall. – A farewell party was given last Thursday night in honor of Conrad Barth, who departed for Neillsville Sunday last to answer the call of Uncle Sam.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Strassman on Saturday, April 27.

A little son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mendalski, aged six months, died on Sunday last.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Kaniewski of South Bend, Ind., on April 15th.

Ed VanErt, who has been employed in Milwaukee, joined the navy and went to the Great Lakes training station last week.

Clayton Daniels has been appointed temporary carrier on Route No. 2 in Hugo Quast’s place and has already begun duties.

The following leave the latter part of this week for Camp Grant: Hugo Quast, John Shabbach, Bazil Harycki, Peter Osowski, Joe Benzschawel, Mike Teclaw, and Nick Dobrzynski.

John Milewski, 18, son of Louis Milewski, was killed by a premature discharge of dynamite while blasting stumps at his father’s farm northeast of Thorp on Wednesday morning of last week.

50 Years Ago (1943)

Joseph Mroz recently purchased the residence property and twenty acres of land in the southeast part of the city of Stanley from Jacob Winkler and moved there last week.

Miss Eugenia Staron, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Staron of Thorp and Pvt. Henry Nyckel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Nyckel of Chicago, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony on Sunday, May 2nd at St. Fidelis Church in Chicago.

Roger Creek – George Lauer is the new owner of the Ernest Mundy farm.  Mr. Mundy has retired from farming on account of advanced age.

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Hermiss Schmidt, on Monday, April 25.

Northeast of Gilman – The Art Lee family sold their farm to Cecil Wry, of Stanley, and has purchased another farm in Sheldon.  They plan to move to their new home by the first of June.

25 Years Ago (1968)

Luverne Fenstermacher, 68, passed away at her home on Monday, April 29th.

Donald R. Logan has been named to the newly created position of traveling agent by Soo Line Railroad Company.  Based at the company’s new Freight Service Center at Eau Claire, but actually working out of Thorp.

The Badger Girl Representative is Gwen Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hanford Anderson and the Badger Boy is Dean Abramczak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Abramczak.

In the past years, the Wisconsin State Telephone Foundation scholarship program has given financial assistance to six students.  This year, the winner is Larry Herman.  He will be awarded $25.00 and is now eligible for state competition.

Word has been received of the birth of a daughter, Allison Ann, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blazel Jr., of Omaha, Nebraska, on April 15, 1968.

Mrs. Herman Guthrie, 78, died at the Gilman Nursing Home on Saturday afternoon.

Mrs. Adolph Aslakson, 80, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire on Saturday, April 20th.

Rev. Wm. J. Olszewski, 63, of St. Peter and Paul Church, Weyerhaeuser, Wis., died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn. April 11th after a short illness.

Funeral services for Peter Mroz, 86, who died April 15th at Owen were held at St. Hedwig’s Chapel, Thorp, April 18th.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Babbitt are holding an open house in honor of their 25th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, May 5th.

Bobb’s Mill – Mr. and Mrs. Anton Plechacek had their little daughter, Carol Marie baptized on Sunday.
