100 Years Ago (1893)

Chris Zapp attended the funeral of W. F. Cirkel at Appleton on Saturday last.
 
Mrs. M. Weber sold the east 1/3 of lot 4, bock (block) 6, East Thorp, to Geo. Banderob, last week, for $135.
 
County Superintendent of schools Geo. E. Cothers (Crothers) has been paying the schools in this neighborhood a visit during the past week.
 
The sawyer at Nye, Lusk & Hudson’s lost control of the carriage on Monday forenoon caused by a portion of bark getting into the way, and was splintered up some.  Clarence Perry, the setter, had one of his knees slightly injured.
 
Tomorrow (Friday) is the day that decides whether this village is to take a step in advance or is to plod along in the unsatisfactory ruts.  Already our neighboring burgs of Colby, Loyal, Greenwood and Boyd have either procured village or city charters and Stanley is talking strongly of imitating their example.  Thorp is larger than any of those named above and here the necessity for a local government is more urgent than at any of the places named above.
 
75 Years Ago (1918)
 
Neiman’s Corner—Anton Balcer sold forty acres of land to A. Jarocki and purchased 40 acres of land adjoining his farm from V. Przybylski.
 
Those who graduated from Dist. No. 2, Town of Worden, are: Elsie Verkuilen, Val.; Susan Verkuilen, Josie Haraburda, Florence Bohn.
 
Bonczyk’s Corner—Joseph Gorecki left to Michigan last Friday where he was called for Uncle Sam’s service.
 
Eidsvold – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Webb on May 25, a baby boy.
 
On Monday 134 men went to Neillsville where they entrained for war service on Tuesday and left for Camp Grand.  Following are the names of those called into service from this vicinity; Basil Harycki, Nick Sydorowicz, Jos. Prokopinski, Frank Koch, Mike Krakowicki, Chas. Sapa, Julius Zwolinski, Vincent Przybylski, John Mroz, Peter Zukowski, Stanley Herman, August Velcheck, Robert Daniel, Jos. Neiman, Rofat Bartoszewicz, Vincent Butkrym, Geo. Wagner, Olaf Nelson, Roger Drangle, Martin Rzetelny, Peter Osowski, Carl Eiler, Arthur Lee, Fred Leja, Albert Warner, Ernest Evenson, Earl Hodnett, Joe Papierniak.
 
Anton Dobrzanski’s sheds and barn in the Town of Withee were burned to the ground on May 17th in the afternoon.  The fire is supposed to have started by a passing traction engine.  No insurance.
 
Another school year has ended and on Thursday evening last the opera house was crowded to the doors by friends and relatives of the young people who composed the 1918 graduating class of Thorp High School.  The class’ roll: Mildred Albert, Stanley Bonk, John Budzinski, Cletus Greisch, Geo. Klak, John Klak, Esther Kronberg, Francis Laurent, Doris Mosher, Geo. Pepera, Nina Steele, Mike Stryk, Frances Tolford, and Florence Tormey.
 
50 Years Ago (1943)
 
Sgt. Allen Mathews, of Eau Claire, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Mathews of the Town of Taft, was wounded in action in North Africa on April 5, 1943, and died the same day.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Wojtkiewicz, of Chicago, on Friday, May 29, 1943.
 
Echoing Valley—A very pretty wedding dinner was held at Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wincek for Miss Irene Wincek to Mr. Rycerz, which took place Saturday.
 
Miss Jeanette A. Zielanis and Agens (Agnes) D. Konieczny, of Thorp, received their diplomas as nurses upon completing a course at the St. Joseph’s School of Nursing at Marshfield last Sunday.
 
25 Years Ago (1968)
 
Fourth Annual Banquet for Honoring Outstanding Citizens was held.  Robert Zukowski, of the Town of Reseburg, was named “Farmer of the Year” and Clarence Ruff, local feed dealer, “Citizen of the year” at the Thorp High School Saturday evening.
 
Funeral services for Anton Baldeschwiler, 87, who passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls, Tuesday will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
 
Karla M. Hutter, daughter of Mr. Karl Hutter of Thorp, has been named to the honor roll of Term II of the 1967-68 school year at St. Norbert College in West DePere, Wis.
 
Miss Jan Hedler, county home economics agent since July 1963, has submitted her resignation in order to accept a promotion as area home economist in Rhinelander.
 
Emil Jarocki, 51, formerly of Thorp, born March 6, 1917, son of the late Joseph and Mary Jarocki passed away May 27, 1968.
 
Mary Grajkowski, 78, passed away at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley of old age complications on Thursday, May 16th.
