100 Years Ago (1896)

The recent fall of snow has served to put the roads in fair condition and log hauling has begun.
 
The two section crews were delighted last week by each receiving a new light running hand car for use in going over their sections each morning.
 
The following are the officers elected and appointed of Thorp Lodge No. 264, F. & A.M., for the new year: Master-Wm. Wagner, Senior Warden-Louis Johnson, Junior Warden-Isaac Jones, Sec.-H. A. Culler, Treas.-H. F. Anding, Senior Deacon-W. R. McCutcheon, Junior Deacon-T. O. Mosher, Tyler-J. B. Bachman.

Bonczyk’s Corner – The little six months old baby girl of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Zawadski died last Friday.
 
Town Line – Julia Timlin returned to her school at Allens Grove Sunday after a week’s vacation with her parents here. – Jos. Banfield of Cuba City has rented John Toomey’s eighty acre farm for one year, possession to be given about March 1st. – Edwin Warner has received his discharge from the U. S. Army and returned home from the Lakehurst New Jersey proving grounds last week.
 
Gilman – A son was born at the home of Wm. Kapszukiewicz on Monday, December 27th. – Miss Genevieve Curran and Mr. Edwin Sletton were united in marriage at the home of Father Konwinski on Monday night at 8 o’clock.
 
Anton Fischer went to Baldwin, N.D. last week and will return about February 1st.
 
The marriage of Howard Daniels to a young lady at Cylon is reported to have taken place on Tues.  Mr. Daniels has been railroad agent at Cylon for the past eight years.
 
Miss Florence Tormey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tormey, and Mr. Harry Mockross, of Boyd, were united in marriage at St. Paul on Wed. Dec. 29th.  Miss Tormey has been employed as a teacher at Wausau and will complete her term and join her husband at Stone Lake where he is employed as a telegraph operator.
 
The mortal remains of Fred Harper arrived here from France on Fri. last and were taken to the home of his parents in the Town of Worden.  A deputation of American Legion Comrades met the train and served as escort.  The young man was one of the first volunteers for service in May 1917, from here and joined Co. B at Stanley being afterward assigned to the 125th Infantry, 32nd Div. and served with honor until killed in action during the battle at Chateau Thierry on Sept. 4, 1918.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Harper and was born May 7, 1898, in Richland County, Wisconsin.

Cpl. Wm. P. Schmidt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Schmidt and Sgt. Robert Telford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vilas Telford, were inducted the same day, three years ago Jan. 18th and were discharged the same day at Camp McCoy, Dec. 16, 1945.
 
The Rev. F. H. Sprengler, pastor of the local Parish, consisting of the Trinity Lutheran Congregation of Thorp, St. Paul’s Lutheran Congregation, Town of Reseburg and Epiphany Lutheran Congregation of Stanley, has accepted the pastorate of the Lutheran Congregation at Dorchester and Abbotsford and will leave this community on January 3rd.
 
Mary Monal, of Madison, and Claude W. Butterfield, of the Town of Reseburg, were married Fri. afternoon at the Glenn Haven residence at Neillsville, with Judge Haven officiating.
 
Funeral services for Mrs. Ray Dobanzski, 73, were held Sat. morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lublin.
 
Last rites were held for Andrew Malinowski, 52, a resident of Lublin, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lublin, on Monday morning.
 
Edward Kocherer, 58, passed away at his home in the Town of Worden on Sat. Dec. 29th.
 
James Cotter, 52, World War I veteran, passed away his home in this Village on Sat. evening of heart trouble.

John G. Bogumill passed away Tues. morning, Dec. 29, at St. Petersburg, Florida.
 
Cdr. George E. Klak died in San Jose, Calif. on Dec. 21st.
 
George J. Bushman, 88, of Chippewa Falls passed away Thurs. Dec. 24, at the Community Memorial Hospital, Bloomer.
 
Louis C. Bogumill, 76, passed away Dec. 24, 1970, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Gloner, of Minneapolis.
 
Born to; Mr. and Mrs. George Pagel, Dec. 28th, a baby boy.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Frese of Withee a baby girl on Dec. 25th.  They named her Christina Marie.
 
10 Years Ago (1986)

 
When the International Harvester dealer in Thorp closed last fall, building owner John Lindquist did not want to leave the valuable space vacant.  He immediately started remodeling the facility into office space.  On Thurs. Jan. 2nd the building will open with its first new tenants.  Mid-State Insurance and General Business Services will open their doors at 104 N. Boardman St., Thurs. morning.
 
Andrew Abramczuk, 97, Thorp, died at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley Sat. Dec. 28, 1985.
 
Sophie Kedizora, 82, Thorp, died Sun. Dec. 29, 1985 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire.
 
John Lato, 73, died at the Thorp Care Center, Thurs. Dec. 26, 1985.
 
Anton Detkiewicz, 63, Thorp, died at his home, Wed. Dec. 25, 1985.
 
Fire caused extensive damage to the home of the Arlin Jenness family, Thorp, Sat. night, Dec. 28.
 
Kenneth C. Osowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Osowski, Thorp, has been included in the 1985 edition of Who’s Who Among Sturdents (Students) in American Junior Colleges.
 
Barbara Jane Bates, formerly Barbara Olejniczak of Thorp, is traveling to Australia in January.  Barbara and her husband William Bates will live in Australia for one year.
