100 Years Ago (1896)

W. C. Tufts, of Withee and Miss Viola Covery of Spokeville, were married at Grand Rapids, Wis. on Dec. 20th.
 
Pretty snug weather was experienced on Fri. and Sat. last, the thermometer reaching a depth of 25 below zero each morning.
 
Wood is cheaper than ever this winter. Good dry body maple and birch can be purchased in unlimited quantities, delivered, at $1.25 per cord.
 
John McGrogan and Jas. Connors are filling up their ice houses with a fine quality of ice, securing the same from the north fork of the Eau Claire River.  Owing to the scarcity of rain, Mr. McGrogan’s pond near his ice house will furnish but little if any of the required article.
 
The Cirkel Manufacturing Co. intends starting their factory in this village this week, having about 300 cords of bolts on hand.  Tight barrel and chair stock will be manufactured at present and flour barrel staves later on.  We understand their plants at Boyd and Cadott will also resume operations within a short time.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – The festive season produced two marriages in Stanley.  Will Allen and Miss Jennie B. Seeley being married on Christmas day and J. M. Persons and Miss Nellie P. Anderson on New Years Day.
 
75 Years Ago (1921)
 
Bonczyk’s Corner – Miss Mary Marek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Marek, was married to Mr. Joeph (Joseph) Sczypek of Proctor, Minn., Jan. 11, 1921.  The wedding took place at Proctor.
 
Town Line – B. G. Splinter has rented Matt Toomey’s farm for the coming season.  Mr. Toomey reserves the buildings. – A little child of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. McCafferty died of pneumonia Jan. 3rd.
 
Gilman – Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Zaborowski, on Thurs. Dec. 30th, a son.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smidtke on Sun. Jan. 9th.
 
50 Years Ago (1946)
 
Born to, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bogumill, at their home here on Fri. Jan. 4, 1946, a baby girl weighing eight and one-fourth pounds.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smoczyk are the proud parents of a bouncing baby girl, born Jan. 3rd at the Victory Hospital.  Mrs. Smoczyk will be remembered here as Victoria Syminsko.  They named the infant Victoria Mary.
 
Miss Lucille McFarlane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward McFarlane of Gilman and Edward R. Ruda, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ruda, of Thorp, were united in marriage Sat. morning, Dec. 29 at the Church of God, Stanley.
 
Eidsvold – Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Alex Gutowski, Jan. 6th a son.
 
West Worden – Born to; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Licht, on Jan. 2, a baby girl.

Mrs. Edwin (Harriet) Schmidt, 69, passed away Tues. evening, Jan. 5, at the Sacret (Sacred) Heart Hospital, Eau Claire.
 
Hedwig Soda, 87, passed away on Christmas Day, at the Victory Memorial Nursing Home in Stanley.
 
Funeral services for Nicholas J. Gengler, 82, Town of Medford were held Sat. Jan. 2, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Schmidt of Stanley became the parents of a baby boy, Trevor Lee, who weighed 7 lbs. 10 oz. and was born at the Victory Memorial Hospital in Stanley on Dec. 22.
 
St. Bernard’s Church, Thorp, was the scene for the marriage of Miss Joan Dahlke and Bernard Budzinski on Sat. Dec. 12.
 
Mrs. Mary Josephine Potaczek, 53, of Ogema, Wis., formerly of Thorp, passed away Thurs. Dec. 31st at Memorial Hospital, Medford.

Chester Cwikla, 80, route 2, Withee, Town of Maplehurst, Taylor County, died Sat. Jan. 4, 1986 at Medford Memorial Nursing Home.
 
Phyllis Zurakowski, 85, Thorp, died Tues. afternoon, Jan. 7, 1986 at Victory Memoiral (Memorial) Hospital, Stanley.
 
Olga Korn, 93, a former Stanley resident, died Wed. Jan. 1, 1986 at Riverside Hospital, Waupaca.
 
Airman Michael J. Rademaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Rademaker, Thorp, has been assigned to Chanute Air Force basic training.
