100 Years Ago (1896)

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Zapp on Monday last.
 
Married at the residence of the groom in the Town of Withee on Tues. Jan. 14th by Geo. Burke, J.P. was Mr. Oliver Dostelier and Miss Carrie Peterson.
 
At the adjourned meeting of the county board held last week it was decided to erect a new jail building near the site of the present one, next summer, at a cost not to exceed $12,000.
 
Mr. Alexander Rous, of Mich. and Miss Stella Hirschy, of the Town of Worden, were married at Stanley on Sat. last.  They will leave for Missouri in a few days where they intent (intend) to reside.
 
75 Years Ago (1921)
 
Eidsvold – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Decker a baby boy on Jan. 16th.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Filipiak, on Jan. 11th.
 
J. E. Strum moved here from Eau Claire with is family last week and are occupying the Connor residence.  Mr. Strum has charge of the Big Four Cannery located here.
 
John Bonczyk recently purchased a restaurant at Minneapolis known as the East Side Café.
 
50 Years Ago (1946)
 
Miss Martha Kobylarczyk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Kobylarczyk of the Town of Withee and Cyril Alger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Alger, were married Jan. 12 at 10 o’clock at St. Hedwig’s Church with Father Piekarski performing the ceremony.
 
Anton S. Kotecki, 61, died at his home in Milwaukee on Jan. 6 of asthma.
 
Frank Yaeger, 87, died at the Becker Hotel, where he has been residing for some time, on Tues. afternoon, Jan. 15th.
 
On January 21, Dr. Bernard Slota is formally opening his dental office in Thorp.
 
E. P. Skroch, who spent the past 40 months in the U.S. Army Air Force was released last month and has resumed the general practice of law on Mon. in the office building three doors south of the “Thorp Courier” office.
 
Lone Oak – Born to Mr. and Mrs. James Devine, Tues. Jan. 8th, a baby girl at the Stanley Hospital.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard White, of Long Beach, Calif. announce the marriage of their daughter, Blendena Jane to Walter S. Baures on Dec. 31, 1945.
 
25 Years Ago (1971)
 
Fire destroyed the equipment and gutted out the entire upstairs of the Thorp American Legion Hall last Thurs. at about the same time Blue Moon and Thorp Finance employees were going from work.
 
Milford V. Wenzel, 64, Owen, died Wed. Jan. 6 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Rachel Anne Borysiak, eight day old infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Borysiak, Stanley, died Fri. at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Walter F. Knusta, 55, a resident of Bensenville, Ill. passed away Jan. 8, 1971 at the hospital in Elk Grove, Ill.
 
Paul Pulokas, a native of Thorp has joined the FS Farm Automation Department as a Systems Sales Representative.
 
Thorp got the jump on Greenwood in the first quarter here Fri. night, taking a 17-7 lead, and hung on to win 63-55.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Graham of Dorchester on Jan. 6th a baby boy and they named him Gregory Allen.
 
10 Years Ago (1986)
 
The Thorp rural Fire Dept. was called to the scene of a car fire in the Town of Reseburg Sun. Jan. 5, 1986.  A vehicle was destroyed in the fire, but action by a resident saved a shed.  The fire took place at the Alvin Graski residence, six miles east and ¼ mile south of Thorp.
 
Installation of crossing arms and 12 inch automatic flashing light signals at the Soo Line Railroad crossing on N. Washington St., in Thorp is expected by Feb. 25.
 
George Jalowitz, 83, Town of Withee, route 1, Lublin, died Fri. Jan. 10, 1986 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Hazel Roesler, 82, Thorp, died Thurs. Jan. 9, 1986 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Frank and Sharon Shaffer of Sheridan, Wyoming wish to announce the birth of their daughter, Gretchen Michelle, born Dec. 17, 1985.
 
Tom and Paul (Paula) Dubiak, Lublin, are proud to announce the birth of their son, Bryan Matthew on Dec. 31.
 
Roger Creek – Mr. and Mrs. Mel Haas announce the birth of a new grandson, Gregory Robert, born Tues. Jan. 7 to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Haas of Thorp.
