100 Years Ago (1896)

Principal of schools, A. O. Rhea visited the school at Chippewa Falls one day last week.
 
Herman Banderob is building a barn 28x62 feet in size on his farm south of Town. Gus Tegelman is doing the job.
 
Martin Groher, who was injured by a falling log on Tues. of last week while working on a rollway in Nye, Lusk and Hudson’s Mill yard, died on the evening of the following day.
 
H. Leibole shipped his household goods to Ironwood last week where he intends to reside.  His family will follow in a few days.
 
Mrs. Jos. Sheblak and Lizzie Kleckner started for Buffalo, N. Y. on Wed. of last week for the purpose of visiting with relatives a few weeks.
 
Rev. A. J. Cappellen arrived here last week from Colby to remain permanently.  His mother and sister have also arrived from the same place.  They will occupy the Koch residence for the present.
 
John Melbinger of this place and Mrs. Caroline Schmidt, of Badger Mills, were married at Chippewa Falls on Tues. the 7th inst.
 
Harry Gormley arrived here Tues. evening accompanied by 150 men.  They will drive the north fork.
 
75 Years Ago (1921)
 
Neiman’s Corner – Vincent Przybylski met with an accident last Fri. morning while working in Neiman Bros. saw mill, his hand was caught in the gears and all his fingers were badly crushed.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Broeren April 8th, a daughter. – Farmers who were planning on starting spring work last week were shoveling snow Saturday. – Charles Vangorder of Stanley has opened the E. F. Heideman black-smith shop and is ready for all kinds of work.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Turenne of this village on Thurs. last.
 
John Daniels purchased twenty acres of land from Wm. Kenney last week.  The land adjoins Mr. Daniels’ present farm on the south.
 
Cards have been received here announcing the marriage of Ernest Karlen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edw. Karlen of the Town of Thorp and Miss Ella Ziehr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Ziehr of Cadott.  The wedding took place yesterday, April 13th at the home of the bride’s parents at Cadott.
 
Thomas Crowley, employed as edger man in the saw mill at Sterling many years ago and later employed in the same capacity here, at Eidsvold and Stanley, was killed in a saw mill at Duluth on Thurs. of last week.
 
Stanley Sokolowski, mail carrier on Rural Route No. 2, from Thorp Post Office met with an accident on Mon. evening, April 11, which cost him his life a few hours later.  At about 6:30 p.m. on that evening he took his Ford car from the garage, on the Dr. Alderson farm in this village and had gone but a few rods when he noticed smoke issuing through the floor of the car in the drivers end.  He stopped the car and was lifting one of the panels from the floor when an explosion took place which was heard throughout the village.  The concussion was terrific, breaking and bending the heavy steel frame and mutilating Mr. Sokolowski in a horrible manner.  He was taken to the Hospital at Chippewa Falls, where he died at 1:30 a.m., about seven hours after the accident.
 
50 Years Ago (1946)
 
Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Misfeldt at the Chippewa Falls Hospital on Thurs. April 11th a seven pound baby boy.  He was named Thomas John.
 
Wm. Peissig sold his property on Highway 29, near the Chevrolet Garage to Herbert Lewin last week.
 
On April 4, at Fort Sill, Lamton (Lawton), Oklahoma, Miss Viola Soeller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Soeller of Thorp, became the bride of Sgt. Joseph Kumbera, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Kumbera, Wausau.  Rev. McNamer performed the double-ring ceremony in the Army Chapel.
 
Six Thorp High boys joined the Army Air Corps.  They are: Walter Bohn, Thorp, Robert Rubisch, Thorp, Clifford Ebben, Thorp, Norman Maier, Thorp, Casmier Jarocki, Thorp, and Bruno Pele, Lublin.
 
Rolling Meadows – Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pagel and family moved to their home in Thorp, which they purchased some time ago.
 
Last rites were conducted by Rev. Piekarski at St. Hedwig’s Church at ten o’clock last Thurs. morning for Mrs. Anton Pawlak, 78, who passed away at her home here on April 8, 1946, after a lingering illness following a major operation.
 
Butler – A daughter, Rochelle Marie, was born April 8th to Mr. and Mrs. Duane Bowen at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
 
25 Years Ago (1971)
 
Judge Richard F. Gaffney passed away Wed. morning, April 14, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Word was received a short time ago of the death of Earl Vanderhoef at his home in Madison.  He was 83 and a resident of Butler years ago.
 
10 Years Ago (1986)
 
Bill Valk is the new owner of Bill’s Barber Shop in Thorp.  Bill recently bought the shop from Bill Nourse, who retired after many years of service due to health reasons.
 
Elizabeth Bandach, 75, City of Thorp, died Mon. April 14, 1986 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
The Thorp Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America proudly announces the election of Cindy Mathison as the state vice president of the Wis. Future Business Leaders of America Chapter.
 
Viola Irene Miller, 90, Sunset Homes, Stanley, died Sun. April 13, 1986 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Alex Neiman, 77, Wausau, former Thorp resident, died Sun. April 13, 1986 in Wausau.
