100 Years Ago (1896)

Stanley Sunbeams – Bridgman Bros. of Iron Co. have made arrangements for and are under contract to start and print a newspaper in this village next week, or very soon thereafter.  The building is located on Second Ave., a little west of the N.W.L. Cos. Store, in which the editor will cudgel his brains to make this new paper worthy of the village of Stanley and a credit to nineteenth century journalism.
 
Jas. Heagle, Jas. Covert, Peter McParland and C. L. Adam went to Boyd on Sun. last to attend the Odd Fellows Anniversary exercises held there.
 
A six-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Lambert died on Thurs. last of pneumonia.
 
John Roth removed to this village with his family from Stanley last week and will reside here in the future.  He has also secured his old job as section foreman, J. T. Rodgers having been transferred to a section near Wheeler.
 
75 Years Ago (1921)

 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jaskot on April 9th, a son. – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pitzen on April 11th. – We were grieved to learn last Thurs. morning of the sad loss by death of Mrs. Geo. Turenne at the St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls, after an illness of only 10 days duration.  She was 18 years, 10 mos. and 24 days of age.
 
Wm. Gorsegner and crew completed a barn 36x92 feet in size on the R. Mamayek farm last week, doing the work in eight and one-half days.
 
Mr. Alex Kobylinski and Miss Josie Skowronski were united in marriage at St. Hedwig’s Church on Tues. April 19th Father Kulig performing the ceremony.
 
Frank Kmiec, residing near Mitterhoffer corners, northwest of the village, died on Wednesday evening of last week.
 
50 Years Ago (1946)

 
Mrs. Morrison C. Anderson, nee Ida May Biddle, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Biddle of the Town of Reseburg, died at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Kattre, Chippewa Falls Sun. afternoon.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Weinberger, of Thorp, Wis., announce the marriage of their daughter, Doris to Richard Mattes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Mattes of Stanley.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Wargolet, Sun. April 26, weighing 10 lbs. 1 ˝ oz.  They named him Robert Thomas.
 
Roger Creek – George Lauer had the misfortune to loose his barn by fire on Fri. evening; the cause of the fire is unknown.
 
25 Years Ago (1971)
 
Major Thomas P. Larson of Pyndall Air Force Base, Florida, son of Mrs. Lief Larson, Thorp, has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
 
Mrs. Anton Maslowski, 57, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield Wednesday morning.  Robert Raven, 62, of Thorp, died Sun. night at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Benzschawel received word April 22nd of the birth of a son, Troy Thomas, weighing in at 7 pounds, 2 ounces; born to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Davis of Arlington, Virginia.
 
10 Years Ago (1986)

 
Mary Catherine Whooley, a teacher at Thorp Elementary School, has been selected for inclusion in the 1985 edition of Outstanding Young Women in America.
 
The Thorp School Board’s immediate solution to the space crunch problem at Thorp Elementary School arrived in Thorp on Thurs. and Fri. April 24, 25.  The 28’x60’ portable classroom was purchased from Trinity Lutheran Church School in Waukesha, for a total of $20,000.
 
On Sat. May 10, Thorp area residents will honor a man who gave much to the youth of the community, as the new Carl Herzak softball park will be dedicated.
