100 Years Ago (1896)

Too much rain for growing crops!  Acres of berries going to waste!
 
The Loyal ball team came up on Sun. last and played the home nine in the afternoon.  The Loyalites won the game by a score of 17 to 19.  The game was very interesting and was much enjoyed by both players and spectators.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – The hemlock bark peeling army, operating north of here, has varied in strength from 200 to 400 men.  The total output of bark this season will be about 4,500 cords. – The village board met on the 7th inst. and granted nine saloon licenses.
 
75 Years Ago (1921)
 
Worden – Mr. and Mrs. Chas Frinack are rejoicing over the arrival of a 10 lb. girl.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Borowski, a daughter July 6th. – Raymond Telford had the misfortune Sun. afternoon to turn the Telford automobile upside down on the highway near the Burrington farm.  The car was slightly demolished and Raymond had a lucky escape from injury. – At the annual school meeting held in School District No. 2, it was voted to build a new two room school building and a loan of ten thousand dollars from the state trust fund loan was applied for.  Frank Wheeler was elected director.
 
The Big Four Canning Co. is operating with a full force on late peas employing about 150 men, boys and girls.
 
The present heat wave is getting on the nerves of people; nearly two months of it and no signs of abatement.  Thermometers range from 92 to 100 daily.
 
Mrs. Julia E. Tolford, 83, died at the home of her son, R. H. Tolford, Sun. July 10th, after a short illness.
 
50 Years Ago (1946)
 
On June 29, the Church of the Ascension, Minneapolis, Minn., was the scene of the beautiful marriage of Bertelle Cecelia Baldeschwiler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Baldeschwiler, Minneapolis and John J. Bauernfeind, son of Mrs. Theresa Bauernfeind, of Chippewa Falls, formerly of this village.
 
In a nine o’clock ceremony performed at St. Bernard’s Church, Sat. morning, Father Muckerheide joined in holy wedlock, Richard Kaz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kaz, and Geraldine Decker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Decker.
 
On Wed. morning, June 19, at 10:00, Miss Ann Yaron, of Lublin, became the bride of Malen Juzwiak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Juzwiak, of Thorp.  The wedding took place at St. Stanislaus Church, Lublin.
 
In a two o’clock ceremony performed at the Finnish Lutheran Church at Owen, Lilly Maki, daughter of Mat Maki of Withee became the bride of Elvin Kile, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Kile, of Butler.
 
On June 29, 1946, St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church was the scene of a very lovely wedding, when Nettie G. Rogalski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rogalski, became the bride of Francis J. Frysiek, son of Mrs. Mary Krysiek, of Philadelphia, PA.  (Transcriber notes that either Frysiek or Krysiek must be in error.)
 
A very pretty wedding took place at St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp, July 3rd at a 10:00 Mass, when Miss Julia Grusecki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Grusecki, and William Tobola, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tobola, of Thorp (were married).
 
Gilman – A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Glen Romig, Sat. – A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Chaplinski at the Stanley Hospital, July 2.
 
25 Years Ago (1971)
 
The Peoples Exchange Bank has received approval from State of Wisconsin Banking Department to establish a branch bank in the Village of Lublin.
 
William Butek, Jr., who resides at California now, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Butek, of Thorp, has received his bachelor degree in the School of Engineering at the Calif. State Poly Technical College on Sat. June 12th.
 
Mr. and Mrs. John C. Maier were informed on Sun. June 27, that a baby boy has been born to Mr. and Mrs. John A. Maier at Milwaukee.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Leon Burkhardt of Gilman had a 7 pound, 4 ounce baby girl born Wed. morning, July 7th at Stanley Victory Memorial Hospital in Stanley.
 
Timothy Jason Harshberger, 13, passed away at Cambridge State Hospital, Cambridge, Minn. on June 27, 1971.
 
Army Private John R. Olson, son of Rev. and Mrs. R. W. Olson, Thorp, recently completed nine weeks of advanced training at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
 
Navy Seaman Apprentice Mark Hermsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hermsen, Thorp, was graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
 
Miss Jennifer A. Wadzinski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wadzinski, became the bride of Timothy J. Milas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Milas, Lublin on Sat. June 12th at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp.
 
Miss Arlene Licht and Albert Wink Jr. repeated their wedding vows on Sat. June 5, at the holy Family Church, South.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. James Petranovich on July 2nd a baby boy. – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Holfelder at Mt. Horeb on June 24th, a son 7 lbs and 9 oz.  They named him Kevin John.  The proud grandmother is Gertrude Barth.

Gail Anderson Cywinski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hanford Anderson, Thorp, was recently named Director of Student Life at Normandale Community College, Bloomington, MN.
 
Tammy Ann Steiner, Mauston, exchanged marriage vows with Douglas John Nedza, Greenwood, on Sat. June 14, 1986 at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, Mauston.
 
Miss Cheryl Lynne Mroz and Terry Paul Halida exchanged marriage vows on Sat. June 14, 1986 at St. Bernard’s-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church.
 
Olga F. Winiarczyk (Winarczyk), Thorp and Mason R. Burns, Eau Claire, exchanged marriage vows on Sat. June 28, 1986 at the Pentecostal Assembly, Eau Clarie.
 
Melissa (Missy) LaCount, 17, Morrisonville, Ill. passed away, Sun. July 13, 1986 at Humana Hospital, Springfield, Ill. following a one-car accident.
 
Leslie Kollmansberger, 61, Owen, died Wed. July 9, 1986 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Services were held Sat. July 12, 1986 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Greenwood, for Matt Malnar, 86, of Greenwood, who died Tues. July 8, 1986 at home.
 
Ray and Isabel Gengler, formerly of Thorp, were honored at a 50th wedding anniversary, June 28, 1986, at Lakeland, Florida.
